Dining Sets - Upholstered or not?

DH and I are starting to look for a dining set for our poor, still-empty dining room.  He likes the look of an upholstered set and I just keep thinking of the upkeep of upholstered chairs - especially the WHITE ones DH decided to like!

Do you have upholstered/leather or plain wood?  Which would you recommend?

(on a side note... the outdoor furniture prices at Levin almost made me roll down the escalator)

Re: Dining Sets - Upholstered or not?

  • I personally prefer all wooden dining sets.   It seems to me upholstered sets always end up looking worn and old long before their time and why would you want to pay every so often to have them re-upholstered so they continue to look nice.  Although I do think leather ones hold up better.

I would opt for a plain wooden set.  You could always put cushions on them (but I'm not a fan of those either).  Dining tables are a place to eat not sit all afternoon.  Padded chairs aren't necessary.

  • I am upholstered of some sort (ours is just the seat) all the way for a formal dining room.  We did have a cranberry sauce spill at Thanksgiving and I presume the chairs had some sort of scotch guard/stain protector bc it wiped away easily.  In all honesty, I got my Cherry Quern Anne style traditional set off Craigslist.  It was an $8000 Thomasville set with 8 chairs, large pedestal table with custom fit pads and extensions, china cabinet with the formal hutch and a large sideboard/buffet.  They left the receipt in the drawer so it was 7 years old when I bought it, in brand new condition as it looks like it was never used bc the pads were in plastic that had to be ripped open.  I watched it on CL for 2 months as he listed it for $3,000 then 2,500 then $2,000.  I went to see it and found out he was going through a divorce, "wife was getting everything in the house and the house" so he was selling everything he could.  I offered him $1500 cash, he countered at $1800, and I stayed firm.  He came down to $1,500.  I wrote some quick buying agreement he signed and paid him $200 to hold the set until I could rent a Uhaul.  Then we came back 4 days later with the Uhaul and gave him the balance.  I love, love, love my set and paid fractions of retail so don't exclude Craigslist as an option!!!

  • Oh, I also bought our bedroom set (it was Bassett or Vaughn Bassett) from some North Carolina online furniture place.  Levin quoted me $4100 with their "best sale" for the identical chest, dresser, mirror, media cabinet (like shorter chest of drawers with open shelf for DVR/DVD), 2 night stands and headboard.  I could buy it from the online site for $2200 with free shipping but it would take 6 weeks.  I tried to negotiate a better deal and they came down to only $3700...and kept saying that the furniture would be there in 3 days as their reason for justifying the cost.  I ordered my set on my phone right there for $2200.  It did take 6 weeks and one nightstand had a small scratch/brushed area the size of a quarter but it was a nightstand so I figured I would do it anyway over time.  The company did credit me 10% back on the nightstand but I saved half by going elsewhere.  I gave Levin the opportunity to have my business and even probably would've gotten it from them for $3,000 or less but not with how little they came down.

  • I think it just depends on the set.  I have this image of upholstered ones that I really dislike because it reminds me of outdated, worn, etc. My grandparents had an upholstered set and that's what I always picture when I think about them. So I think that's why I originally was drawn towards all wood.  However, I have seen some nice new ones. My friend has a set that is upholstered on the seats and it's really a nice set.  Our set is all wooden and I love ours too.  I just don't think we saw any upholstered ones we liked at the time.  I love the simplicity of ours and not having to worry at all about fabric with a kid and food.

I think for us we like the look of many of the all wood sets, whereas we don't like as many of the upholstered sets.

  • we just bought a new DR set in May.  The table is a large oval, very shabby chic and we have four upholstered chairs + 2 very large throne-like upholstered chairs on the heads of the table.  i think it looks awesome :) we don't have any kids so we weren't overly concerned about messes.  Plus the chairs are dark grey and light grey.

  • Ours are upholstered; in our hold house we didn't have an eat in kitchen, so we were eating at this set for every meal.  Jake's chair was definitely a mess by the time we moved out of that house, but we had a warranty on the set, so they came and cleaned it, and it's good as new now.  In the house we're currently in, we have it in the dining room and we eat in the kitchen, so the only time we use the dining room is if we have a bunch of people over, or for holidays.  I bring in a folding chair for the kids to use during those meals :)

We did get upholstered seats on the chairs in our kitchen, and I keep a chair cover on Jackson's seat to save it from major stains.

  • I love the look of upholstered (and also rattan or banana leaf), but it would never last with my kids. Lanna will literally wipe her hands on the seat of the chair. So, for now, we're sticking with wood. I did buy some cheap cushions from Ikea for our dinette for the new house b/c wood isn't the most comfortable.
  • For a formal dining room I like and upholstered seat.  It just looks more formal to me.  We will only be using ours for special occasions so I'm not really worried about the kids messing it up.

  • Ours are not upholstered but that is because I think upholstered chairs would look odd with our table. We don't have a set per se. Our table and chairs are from Pottery Barn. The buffet and china closet are "vintage" although we do have the table and chairs that match in our attic and they are upholstered but I am not a fan.

FWIW, we have this table and these chairs

  • How about a mix of wood side chairs and two upholstered chairs at the ends of the table? I saw a few nice pics of this online and am thinking of doing it in our new house. That way if my kids destroy a chair I?ll only need to replace two rather than a set of 6-8
  • Oooh, Kris.  I like that set!!

Of course the wooden-seat set we liked just went out onto the floor yesterday, so it's not on sale.  I don't mind spending the money on a nice set, but I don't feel like any that we saw were very good quality.

I think we need something between formal and rustic.  We're not too into the country look, either.

At least this makes me feel a little better about upholstered seats.  I found leather chairs at TJ Maxx that I loved.  I would only need to find a matching table... and two extra chairs at another TJ Maxx maybe.  Perhaps matching a table won't be as difficult as I had thought.

This is our style too and I struggle to get it right.

  • I was going to say, TJ Maxx, Marshall's and Home Goods have pretty upholstered dining chairs for cheap, but they always have 2 of a kind. So if you want them all to match you have to drive around!

I think pedestal tables look nice w/ all styles of seating personally. We ordered this from Pier One for our dinette and it's 68" with the extension ($399 and comes in black and brown):

Thanks, they have had it for a while. I got it when I moved into my house, 12 years ago. I do believe it was on sale of some sort, but my parents bought it for me since they thought my dining room looked sad with no furniture! Although, my husband "collects" dining room sets. At one point we had 3. We sold one to my sister and the other is in our attic.
