Registry

Hi - Im a first time mom and am looking to start my registry.  I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for must haves or dont waste money on items?  These stores can be a little overwhelming!  Thanks!

Re: Registry

  • If you are breastfeeding ! A hoppy works wonders to help in the first month while you are establishing the latch....also a bouncy chair usually works wonders. And if you want a nite lite that is fun and safe not matter how long you have it in I suggest the twiddle dink(?) from Walmart. It's like $25 and shaped kinda like person and changes through 5 different colors and stays cool to touch and is plastic! Both Robbie and Faith have played with Robbie's light with no incident

  • A lot of it might be trial & error as far as what your baby loves...for instance, my older son hated the bouncy seat, loved the swing.  My younger son was the exact opposite. I did love this bouncy seat:

It's Bright Starts automatic bouncy seat (you push a button and the seat bounces, genius!)  I loved my boppy and used it religiously for both kids (I would suggest registering for an extra cover for spit up incidents)

I didn't bother with a wipe warmer (which you'll see on a lot of the registry must-have lists).   I'm really blanking on much else, it's amazing how quickly you block it all out......

  • I didn't think I would use the swaddlers but my kids love them and generally won't sleep without them.  Also this chair is one of my boys favorite things to hang out in.

  • Ditto the swaddle blankets and swing from above.

One thing I did register for but thought was a waste was the diaper champ. we ended up just getting a regular garbage can with a lid. Worked fine.

Pack & play for sure also. that was great.

Oh yeah we have a two story house and the pack & play we got has a changing table as part of it.  We use it all the time it saves us a ton of trips up and down the stairs a day.

  • Pack n' play, swaddleMe, sleep sacks, Boppy, baby bathtub (our had a hammock type thing that snapped on for a newborn), bouncer, activity gym

  • I liked having some waterproof flannel pads when my son was an infant.  I used them under him when he napped or during diaper changes.  And when he got more mobile I put them between the sheet and the mattress to protect it.  In case of diaper leak, blowout, spit up - the pads are much easier to throw in the wash versus changing the whole bed.

  • Pack and plays are awesome and a perfect baby keeper when you gotta run! The other thing I wished I didn't have to buy was a cd player/clock radio and a waterfall cd for both kids, Robbie loves the waterfalls more than Faith, she loved Frank Sinatra! but that is just me wishing I had something I didn't own that I had wished I did instead of having to buy.... And if you find baby does love a certain blanket right away try to get a back up right away, faith chewed a hole in hers from how she comforts herself with it from day 1, and we never found another like it..

  • Oh, I forgot! Little nail scissors not nail clippers.

  • Loved the pack n play with the changing table for downstairs! I also ditto the sleep sacks and swaddlers, both were awesome. Our kid was pretty easy going and liked pretty much all of the gear. My only suggestion is with the swing, get one that plugs in. We loved that we never had to worry about the batteries in it dying, especially because she loved sleeping in it.
  • Sheet savers were awesome for the bassinet.

I got a TON of blankets after he was born as gifts, so I might suggest waiting until after the baby and buy them if you still need to.

  • this is often asked over on the moms side of the getting pregnant board.

also, BRU has a guide to help you with your registry.

rock n' play is most suggested from GPM. pack n play is not. we don't have the room for the latter anyways, so it doesn't matter to us.

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

A rock n play is great for newborn sleeping but when your baby is around 5-6 months old and you're trying to make dinner, a pack n play with some toys is a God send.

  • It really depends on your needs.  Me, I have two nebby dogs.  The pack n play was great for first floor diaper changes.  I had a place to do it where they couldn't get up in his business.

  • We got a lot of use out of our pack & play, too, I think it depends on your needs, the set up of your house, etc...  With jake, I just used it as another diaper changing station/somewhere to put him in the living room; with Liam, we used it as a bassinet for the first 7 weeks and he slept in our room in the PnP.  We also used it a lot when traveling.

  • We used both the PnP and the Rock N Play.  S slept in the RnP for several weeks.  (Months?)  Also, it was easier to travel with that when he was small.  I wouldn't register for a separate bassinet, though.  At least the PnP has functionality well down the road.  S still sleeps in his in my office.

Think a little further down the road, too.  Depending on when you're due, if there isn't another major gift giving holiday between Baby's birthday and 6-7 months, think about what baby may want/need before them.  An excersaucer is good.  (Actually, S started using his around 3 1/2 months).  He also LOVED the Johny Jump up he got for Christmas...but he was actually pretty close to the weight limit at 7 months.

Here are some other suggestions.  Use your best judgement based on what you want to purchase yourself, how big a shower you're having etc.  (I was blessed with two showers, so I had a ton of stuff on my registry.)

    High Chair

    Travel High Chair

Swing  (ditto gwen- get one that plugs in)

toys for a bit down to road.  (My Pal Scout is pretty awesome!)

    Miracle blanket/sleepers

I got tons of towels with out registering for them.

I skipped the bath tub and just got the foam mat for him to lay on in the bottom of the tub.  We would then only fill the tub up about 1 - 2 inches.

    books

    Car seat/Infant carrier

    Stroller

    Breast Pump (?)

Bumbo (it has very limited usefulness, IMO, but some people swear by them.)

I found I got plenty of blankets (not swaddlers) without registering for any.  I also got several packs of diapers.

Also, we didn't know what we were having, so we didn't get too many clothes on the front end, but people were abundantly generous when we got home from the hospital.  So, beyond an outfit to come home from the hospital in, and a few things for the first week or two, I wouldn't stock up on too many clothes.

    Good luck, and congratulations!

  • We didn't have a normal highchair and were happy with the Fisher Price travel booster thing we bought.  we had an exersaucer and jumperoo which were useful for a time.  Playmat was the first "toy" she could use.  we also had a pack-n-play and it was great for sleepovers later in her life, but early on we used it for diaper changes mostly when we were on the first floor.  They didn't have rocknplays back in the day- but a friend has one and I like it better than a bassinet.  folds up nicely- and you can take it along and use it like a bouncy chair.  don't register for blankets.  Just sheets/mattress pads. people buy blankets cause they are naturally drawn to them.
  • The most-used items we received from our registry are:

    Pack N Play

    Crib Sheets

    Waterproof pads in various sizes

Bassinet (we didn't register for it, it was a spontaneous gift, and it was a life-saver. we couldn't fit a pnp in our bedroom)

Swaddle Blankets (register for sizes S/M and L)

Diaper style burp cloths (they look like the old-style cloth diapers, we use them constantly)

    Bath tub or Bath sling

Feeding supplies (breastpump, bottles, bottle brushes, dishwasher basket)

Boppy and 1 or 2 extra covers

Nail Scissors (not clippers, they're easier to use)

Travel High Chair (we JUST started using this. I don't think a giant high chair is necessary anymore) We have a really nice Fisher Price one that basically looks like the top of a "traditional" high chair.

     Diaper Genie Elite w/ refills

Travel System (car seat stroller combo)

Sound machine (like this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/HoMedics-SoundSpa-Lullaby-Sound-Machine-with-Picture-Projection/5913225) We have this specific one. I thought it was a weird gift when we got it. Out of desperation and sleepless night # gajillion, we tried it and he hasn't slept w/o the "rain" sound since. We have two dogs and hard wood floors so this dampens most noises and lets him sleep.

    Have fun registering and congratulations!
