Spoiled brat vent

My birthday was earlier in the week, and my mom told me Monday that she and my step-dad wanted to take my family and me out to eat Friday night.  She said we could go wherever I wanted, and to let them know where.  I was initially thinking of Picasso Cafe, but it isn't especially kid friendly.  I also didn't want to have to wait forever there for a table on a Friday night (and I have had hit and miss service there before).  So, I decided I wanted to go to Queen of Sheba since it is one of my favorite places, we never have to wait for a table and I know that there is something there that DS can eat that he likes.

My mom called me today and asked if I could find somewhere else to eat because my step-dad is freaked out by the idea of Ethiopian food.  I appreciate that he wants to take me out for my birthday, and I don't want him to spend a bunch of money on a meal he won't enjoy, but I am a little irked.  It is hard to find a restaurant that I really enjoy that has food that my whole family can eat since H and DD are vegetarians and DS can't have milk.  It's hard to find out for sure what DS can eat if a restaurant doesn't serve something vegan or have a sheet about allergen info since half the time servers don't actually check ingredients when you ask about it.

I feel like a brat for being irritated at my step-dad over a meal he is offering to pay for, but part of me wants to tell him to suck it up and try something new.

(I won't - I think we are going to go to Ted's.  I figure surely DS can have a taco with no cheese or something like that.

  • I'd be irritated too.  Maybe the next time you guys go to QOS you could get something to go to take to him that you think he'd like...that way he'd figure out that Ethiopian food is actually awesome, and he's been missing out!  You're probably right on not saying anything if he'll be picking up the tab, but it still sucks to not be able to do what you want to do on literally the only day that is solely about you.

  • Yup, I would be irritated too.

You could always cancel on them.  Surprise

  • It's your party, and you'll eat what you want to.

Your dad can suck it up. YOLO, man, eat some Ethiopian food.

I could, but it is not my habit to turn down a meal which I don't have to cook or pay for.  Plus, my step-dad is awesome and has done so much for me and my family (adding to my feeling that I am being a brat for being irritated).

  • I don't blame you a bit for being annoyed. It's YOUR birthday. You get to choose.

Plus, I just kind of get the feeling that you're hardly a bratty person, which makes me all the more incensed for you. :)

Btw - so we've had an Ethiopian exchange student for the past couple of years (he doesn't live with us or anything, but it's kind of a help-the-exchange-students-get-acclimated kind of thing). Anyway, he tells us that a new Ethiopian place opened up that he says is even better than Sheba. Helpfully, I don't know the name, but I'll find out and page you.

Is it Blue Nile in Edmond maybe?  I ate there a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it, too.  They had a few dishes that Queen of Sheba doesn't have but didn't have the one that I always find myself ordering (which was actually good because I ended up getting the vegetarian sampler and trying some new things that were really tasty).

I am probably about to change your mind. :P I decided it's all OK because I think I can work this to my advantage and convince H to take me out to Queen of Sheba on Saturday since I have been looking forward to having it for my birthday all week.  Thus, two meals that I don't have to cook (or clean up after) for the price of one.

    Win win! Happy birthday :)

    Sounds totally reasonable to me!

I still need to try Queen of Sheba. Thanks for reminding me.

Hardly. A stroke of genius, more like. :D It IS Blue Nile! I asked him and he already wrote back. I'll have to try that place!

  • Win-win - I like the way you think, lady!
  • There is nothing bratty going on in this thread.

I hope you had a great birthday and enjoy both dinners!

  • Sorry that happened! However, I can understand his hesitation.. Queen of Sheba can be intimidating for your average steak-and-potatoes guys. :)

On the plus side, Ted's is really good about food allergies. So you shouldn't have problems.

Enjoy both of your meals! Glad it worked out and you get to go to Queen of Sheba on Saturday. :)

  • Critti and others---we have actually never been to QOS.  I wouldn't have a clue what to order there.  We aren't picky and love pretty much all food...will they be able to explain the menu and make suggestions? Or can some of you rec some dishes that will make my h go back after the first time?:)

  • I don't think your thread's bratty, either - I would've been irritated, but sounds like you got a great outcome anyway [two meals for the price of one, yay!]. Now I want to try QOS, too.

  • You guys should definitely try QoS. The wait staff didn't really make a lot of suggestions when we went, but you can tell from the menu online what you'd like IMO. I'm sure several people here would be happy to answer questions about what stuff is and what to try.
  • Thanks everyone (for the birthday wishes and for telling me I'm not a brat :P)!

I can't remember the names of any of the meat dishes, but one of my friends ordered the one that is lamb with rosemary, and she and her husband loved it (and he is more of a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy). I think they may also have essentially the same dish made with beef.

My go-to is the Atkilt Watt.  It is a stew (pretty much all of their dishes are thick stews that you eat with your fingers using the injera bread) with potatoes, carrots and green beans in a mild, buttery-tasting sort of sauce.  I can't remember what it is called, but there is a dish that is the same thing but with lamb added, which I really enjoyed too.

The older woman who works there is usually really helpful about explaining things to you and answering questions.  The younger guys, not so much, in my experience (not that they aren't trying to be helpful, but I think maybe it is more of a language barrier issue).
