This summer has been rough for job searching. Last year I put out over 100 applications and got calls for at least 6-7 interviews by this time. This year there's less teaching jobs around here and I haven't gotten a call yet.
After this summer I'm going to start looking at a career change. I have no idea what to do though. So in desperation or craziness, I've now decided to apply for teaching jobs all over the US and see who will take me and go there.
I think H is gonna kill me if we end up in the middle of nowhere. I probably won't tell him I just applied for a job in Minnesota. It's in a town called Big Lake. I just google mapped it and yes, there's indeed a big lake there called "Big Lake"
Re: I think I'm losing it
Hang in there! H searched for a job for a VERY long time and he just recently found one at the same company I'm at. It's a very stressful process, and in the teaching world it can be even tougher. I know it's easier said than done, but I'm sure that something will come along if you keep putting yourself out there.
What grade are you looking to teach?
I'm certified K-12 so I can teach any grade. My preference is 4th grade and up, but I'm applying for any job that I sound reasonably qualified for.

I was a sub for one year and then decided I needed a more consistent job and insurance. A friend of mine subbed for 3 years very consistently, was very well-known and requested often in the districts he worked in, and still has not been hired. It helps you get your name out in the district you sub in, but if that district doesn't have openings like in my friend's case, you're just kinda stuck.
I've applied to a few jobs in Illinois now. I wouldn't mind moving there and they offer a provisional certificate for teachers who have out of state certification so it's doable.
I also have an odd interest in Colorado. I think I've just heard different people randomly talk about it lately. I really just want to travel the whole US. Is there a job that does that? Road trip adventurer extraordinaire?
ETA:
Whoa. Imagine living here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrow,_Alaska There's a job opening at their elementary school (no way in hell I'd go there), but it made me curious where it was. It's the highest geographic location in the US. The roads there don't connect to anywhere else in Alaska so you have to fly out. 160 days out of the year the temperatue is below zero. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I'm originally from IL and my mom has been a teacher in middle of nowhere IL for around 20 years, so if you need any info on the state or good/bad cities let me know!
H and I move around A LOT like every 2 years for our jobs and I feel like we would go almost anywhere (minus maybe Alaska--WAY too freakin cold up there!) I feel like you kind of have to follow the job sometimes, I know with us in sales if you want to move up fairly quickly you generally have to move towns or states.
Also good luck on the teaching job search, hope you find something soon!!
Good luck, Dee!!!! Teaching is so difficult. Around here there have been many more jobs posted this year than in past years. Want to come to Michigan? :0) Remember that lots of jobs open up right at the end of the summer too, so don't give up yet!!!
I have totally been in the position of thinking about a career change (and I've had a teaching job!!!! LOL...it can be so tough!), but I also had no clue what I'd want to do.
What are you certified in? Around here, there's only a few things that you could teach k-12.
