DH and I are going to go somewhere for our anniversary next year. We have never really taken a real trip (driving distances only for long weekends) so we are due! We would probably be gone about 5 days (we have 2 small children and that is all I could probably bear to be away) and don't want a lot but enough to have a nice trip.
Trouble is, we don't know where to go! It has to be somewhere in the states but could be a cruise...Any suggestions on where to start looking into? What do you like best about the location you recommended? What do you just HAVE to check out while there? I would prefer somewhere in a warmer climate. Thanks!
Re: Anniversary trip - where to go?
I haven't been, but I have heard nothing but good things about Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. I've looked into these destinations a little bit as I would like to go in the future. Both seem like they would be great for a romantic anniversary vacation.
Otherwise, I would definitely suggest a cruise. DH had to convince me to take our first cruise as I was worried I would be bored. It was quite the opposite and I now think cruising is fantastic! Fly into your starting port a day early so that you can be a little flexible if your flight is delayed. There is plenty of entertainment on the ships and the food is great. Food is available all of the time in unlimited quantities. It's easy to overindulge and it's almost a little hard to come back home and eat like a normal person again! I also love the fact that every morning you wake up in a new destination with new activities and new places to explore.
I second cruise! Any island would be a good time! I've done Carnival and really had a great time!
DH & I l.o.v.e to cruise. You'd really enjoy it - it's relaxing yet has a lot to do. Dress up, dress down, whatever you want. Room service 24/7 - {we love midnight snacks at night}. However, I do suggest picking Carnival as your cruise line - they are very fun & always have something going on. Lots of entertainment. If you do cruise, pick early dining so you don't miss out on all the awesome shows they have. {you have a choice of early dining {6:30} or late dining {8:00}}
Especially being you have two kids, you need the time away - yet 5 days is much plenty to cruise. If you have any questions, don't hestitate to ask. We cruise A LOT && always recommend it.
You can check out more of our honeymoon {cruise} here: http://www.ardjla.blogspot.com/search/label/Honeymoon && we also took another cruise back in April 2012 you can check out here: http://www.ardjla.blogspot.com/2012/06/there-was-this-one-time-i-went-to.html
Good Luck planning!
We too, are planning our 1st anniversay trip - we are thinking about going to Epcot Disney {Florida} to expereince the Around the World {a place where you learn about several different countries by going from country to country drinking & seeking their culture.} it's not like Disney Disney - you have to be 21 years of age! It's something we probably wouldn't do once little ones come along!

It would be summertime probably less than $5000 total (and that is probably overshooting it!)

Cruises are fun, but in case you wanted more ideas...
*Gatlinburg, TN--Smokey mountains--definitely hot in the summer. Lots of things to do in town and nearby.
*Savannah, Georgia---Never been, but the beaches look beautiful online!
*Chicago--Lots of free things to do in the city; great restaurants, baseball, fun cruises on Lake Michigan, wonderful live theatre, beaches; lots of easy day trips by train
*NYC--I'm a theater lover, so NYC is perfect for me. So many historic things to do, TV show tapings, restaurants, Times Square, Central Park, I could go on and on. NYC isn't cheap, but it is cheap in the summer compared to going in the fall!
Best wishes!
