first birthday thoughts

So as I previously mentioned, I'm in the very beginning stages of planning DS's bday party.  We are looking at October 13th as the date.  We currently live in a 2BR apartment so a house party is most definitely out.

As an alternative, I was thinking of having it for a few hours in the afternoon at a park near our house.  We can rent a pavilion for like $100.  It's alcohol and tobacco free so that's perfect.  I was thinking I'd rent a clown to sing songs, do balloon animals, paint faces, etc.  We're looking at 70 people (don't judge - it's mostly family and that's including kids).  I checked the weather and the average temp for the last two years on that date was 65 degrees with zero rain.

DH seems leery because of weather.  I love this as an alternative to renting a hall for various reasons.  Am I pushing it or should we just rent a hall and call it a day?  I have not a lot of options if it rains.

Re: first birthday thoughts

  • October is kind of touch and go.  I remember years when it was warm and other years being at a Phillies playoff game and it being chilly.  I would go for it though, as if it is cooler, it won't be freezing cold.

  • I say go for it.  My bday is October 15, and we did birthday parties outdoors for me a few times growing up.  Weather in October can be so beautiful...and yes, chilly at times...but people can wear sweatshirts or whatever if it gets chilly.

I agree.  Even if it is slightly chilly, I find most people are just so happy for the new season / change of weather, that they enjoy being outside.

  • I think it's a great idea.  If it's chilly, you can bundle up and at least you'll have the pavilion roof in case it rains.

  • Those were my thoughts as well.  DH was on the fence but I convinced him last night.  I guess I just needed others to agree with me :)

Thanks!  You are all, as always, the best!

  • As a Mom with 3 kids who's birthdays fall in October, I say go for it. The weather has been great for the past 3 years around that time. (Andrews bday is the 12th)
