s/o house/dog sitter

Hello all,

Since the board is slow...The question below got me thinking about dog sitters. How much would you pay someone to stay at overnight at your house to watch your dog? Would the amount differ if the person was not bonded/insured, i.e. a professional pet sitter? What about if the person ONLY stayed with the pooch, fed him, but did not take him on walks?

The reason I ask is we have a college student who stays overnight with our dog at our house when we are gone. She feeds him, waters plants, gets the mail and papers, but doesn't walk him, pick up poop (unless it's in the house) or anything else. She still has a job and doesn't spend a lot of time at our house. She's also not a dog sitter, per se, but does it for extra cash. I'm thinking we probably need to pay her more. We've asked her what she wants and she says "whatever". My husband says if we were paying her enough, she simply wouldn't be available.

What do you say?

Re: s/o house/dog sitter

  • Back when I was 23 (seems like years ago), my coworker asked that I come over and watch her two dogs. I actually stayed the night at her house for five days, water the plants, feed, let dogs out, cleaned up vomit, poop inside the house, etc. I wasn't paid much $100 for the week. Obviously I don't know the going rate these days.

ETA: I actually never walked the dogs, because they were both very old (13 & 14 years old).

  • I used to dog/house sit but in a very wealthy neighborhood.  I would walk the dog(s), get the mail, etc.  Typically, I would get around $50/day.  I don't think that's necessary - especially if she isn't walking the dog.  A friend of mine still dog sits for relatives/friends and I believe she asks for $30-35/day.

  • I did dog/house sitting AGES ago, too, though I did walk the dogs. I don't remember how much I got paid...

I obviously wasn't paid very much! LOL!

  • Back in college I used to housesit for coworkers and family friends and they would usually leave me a few hundred dollars for a week plus food. I would stay in the house overnight, walk the dog, feed the cat, change litter boxes, etc...Granted they probably paid me more b/c they knew me personally.
  • why doesn't she walk the dogs?

I dog/house sat for friends when I was younger/single and normally got somehwere around 50/day, I don't think I walked the dogs b/c they had a huge yard, but I did play w/ the dogs several times a day and make sure they went out.

  • I don't know - I should have asked her to walk him, but DH told her that dog could "just go in the yard". She makes sure that he goes out and plays with him, when she's there. We're ok with this, though. We really don't want to board our dog, so having someone come and stay is our other option.
