Newbie ....Questions Please

Okay so my hubby and I have been married for a lil more than a year, very happily... I have some debt that has occured such as a cable bill of $400+ a bank overdrawn of $500+ and an apt place that we left *we were outta lease but still owe $600+ so roughly $2k in debt.(has been almost a year that they've bbeen like that).. most would say thats not bad, in my eyes I think about it as I need to get this taken care of, Don't know how to check my credit score, but we are wanting to move into an apt soon and get a car or house.... would this have a big impact on anything?

Thanks for your help

  • I'm not sure what state you live in but the fact that you owe money on another lease may prevent you from getting another apartment. The best bet would be to pay that off as soon as you can. In the past, I've used those free credit report websites that they advertise on tv and its helped me a lot. If you're credit score is low, that may also prevent you from getting a car unless you had a large down payment. Also, if you start looking for cars, they can also give you your credit score, kill two birds with one stone.

This will count as an inquiry on your credit score, bringing it down further.  This isn't a good way to get your credit report.  OP, go to myfico.com, experian.com, equifax.com, or transunion.com and buy your report.  Make sure whatever package you get includes 2 things: 1) your score (not just the report) and 2) the full reports and scores from all 3 credit bureaus.

OP, I can't quite decipher your post, but you'll need to get your ducks in order before you buy a house or car.  Go to the library and check out (or buy) Personal Finance for Dummies and Home Buying for Dummies.  You need to educate yourself so you can make smart decisions going forward.  GL!

To inquire about your credit score from a bank or credit organization won't, but having your credit run because you're taking out more credit (i.e. applying for a car loan or a new credit card) will. That's why the PP suggested those websites. They won't hurt your credit and you'll know where you stand. Make sure to get your credit score from the 3 bureaus, though, that's important, because an out-of-date credit score (some cheaper inquiries only get credit scores from little known credit bureaus, which won't have up to date information) can affect a lot.

$2,000 isn't a ton of debt. Get it payed off, get an apartment, then buy a car. That'd be my advice :)

  • Yea I think we are going to try to get a car from a friend for now because we dont have one and the ppl we live with gave us 6 months to get into a house/apt so maybe the apt can be in his name since it was in mine... idk.. :) hope and wish for the best

    Thanks

If you check your own score, it does not harm it.  It does when other people do when you're applying for more credit (utilities, loans, rental checks).
