Southern California vacation

My husband and I are planning a trip to California in mid-October. I'd like to visit San Diego and LA, and there's a wine tour that weekend in Paso Robles. Could anyone give me advice on where to stay, how to get around, what to see, etc? Or do you have a better idea of what to see while we're there?

Thanks!

Re: Southern California vacation

  • How much time will you guys have?

You'll definitely want to rent a car while in LA/San Diego.

In the LA area I really like Santa Monica and Pasadena. I was just in LA this last weekend and one of the places we visited was the Huntington Library and Gardens in Pasadena which was so beautiful!

In San Diego I love Balboa Park (so many great places to visit), Crystal Pier, Old Point Loma Lighthouse, USS Midway Museum, Torrey Pines State Reserve, La Jolla, Gaslamp Quarter, Mission San Diego de Alcala, and the Hotel del Coronado.

  • I forgot to mention that my next blog post will be on sightseeing in San Diego, so check back within the next week on my blog!
  • Totally agree with PP on renting a car in LA...our traffic is ... let's just say not our best quality..but public transportation isn't as good as in other cities. So having a car is going to be your best option.

I love Santa Monica! So that would be a good place to start, but what kind of things are you interested in? We have a variety of museums, restaurants, beaches, shops..

Where to stay will depend on your budget. Santa Monica is fun and beautiful, but because it's a beach area, it can be kind of pricey...but it depends what you're looking for.

Let us know what you're interested in..also check out www.discoverla.com

Hope this gives you somewhere to start.

  • If you want a very centrally located hotel in LA but not too expensive or fancy, I recommend the Holiday Inn Express on Wilshire in Westwood, right at the 405 Entrance.  We had our wedding guests stay there a few weeks ago and you cant beat the location-10 mins east of Santa Monica and minutes west of Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, etc.  They also give you free breakfast every morning.
