Pedi and solid recs vent

My pedi is driving me crazy with their recommendations for solids.  It seems like they're very right or left on a lot of issues.  And each doctor has a different recommendation and is very strict about "their" way.

For instance they were pushing me to start purees at 4 months and acted like I was crazy for waiting until 6 months.  But with Brinley they were fine with us waiting until 6 months (same practice different office/different doctor)

Then they said purees only--no table foods/finger foods until atleast 9 months.

Then the doc on call acted like I gave my 8 month old poison by giving him yogurt because that should wait until 9 months.  I know the pedi OK'd it prior to 9 months when Brinley was a baby--because DD refused purees around that time, but would continue to eat yogurt, which she had been eating prior to 9 months old.

It baffles me how two locations of the same office can be so different (I loved the Mt. Lebo office!), and how the doctors at each office can vary so widely in their recommendations.

Re: Pedi and solid recs vent

  • I have very limited experience, obviously, but I've noticed this with my ped, too. One doctor is insane-o about one thing, then another doctor completely contradicts the other. It's so annoying.

Fwiw, we were told to start G on rice cereal at 4 mos, and we did, but he kept rejecting it. This weekend I mixed in a bit of sugar-free apple sauce and he gobbled it up. I'm probably going to be put in mommy jail if my ped gets wind of it.

I've spoken to the "head" doctor at my ped's office about the contradictory opinions and recommendations and he thanked me for informing him. I'm not sure if anything will change, but I felt like someone needed to know. Maybe try that?

    Good luck!

  • I think it's pretty common to find different opinions from pedi's on things like this.  When it comes to things like feeding, sleeping, etc., I'll get our pedi's input, but don't really take it as the bible when it comes to making a decision about what we want to do.  The closest I ever came to a puree with Garrett, was mashing food up with a fork, we pretty much started him with table food at 6 months old.  My pedis seemed okay with that, but even if they weren't, it wouldn't have changed our approach.
  • Ditto what Meghan said.  Our pedi told us we could start solids at the 4 month checkup, but didn't say we had to.  Eleni wasn't showing signs of being ready then. And from my own reading I decided we would wait. also, we scheduled most of her well visits with the same doctor, one I felt matched many of my own perspectives on the less critical decisions like that.
  • Ditto others. I feel like in general pedis seem to be a little behind the times with feeding and other general parenting advice, but as long as I'm getting sound medical advice I over look it!

I think one of the reasons I struggle with it is initially we had a doctor that we preferred who's views and perspectives seemed to match my own--but she was at another location that is just too far for it to be convenient.  And I've tried several of the doctors at the practice at this location and haven't found "the one" yet.  And the one that gave the advice today is one that I had previously ruled out entirely.

  • Ditto Amanda and Meghan. I don't even really remember talking much about food with dd's pedi. I read and researched and decided I definitely wanted to wait until 6 months and just mash up food and do table foods. I like our pedi though and stick with her unless it's a sick visit and have to see somebody else. I like her because she seems to match up well with our style and she really doesn't force unnecessary info on us. She will ask of we have questions and give the basics but she really didn't weigh in that much on stuff like starting food and sleep. And I liked that.

we initially had a ped office that was 5 mins away but their advice was straight across the board ("solids at 4 mos" regardless of any readiness signs which my oldest had none at the time), so I went to a single ped that listened to my concerns even if I had to drive further.   Remember those first year appts seem like alot but when you get older hopefully its only 1-2 X a year so you can afford to drive further for a better fit.

But ditto the others on taking feeding/sleeping advice with a grain of salt.

  • It's really not the well baby visits that I'm concerned about--if I can plan it out driving father isn't that big of an issue.  It's the sick visits that would concern me.

Although, I should stop hoping that this office will be like the other one in the practice.  I really just need to cut my losses and look for a pedi closer to home that is in alignment with our family.

  • I just don't discuss anything but my own concerns w/ them.

"How is she sleeping?" - "We're all getting enough rest"

"Have you started solids?" - "We wait until 6mo"

"When are you planning to wean" - "I'm not sure - nursing is working well for us"

"Well, you can do x,y,z now" - "Thanks, that's good to know"
