granite counter top people come in!

What do you all use to clean them?? I try to make as many of my cleaners as possible and even more so, try to avoid chemicals. I have been researching what to use and had decided on a mixture of rubbing alcohol, dish soap, and water. As I was getting ready to make it (as in had everything ready, just looking up amounts) I decided to read the comments on the site with the recipe. There was one comment from someone who said he or she worked a granite place and you should NOT use rubbing alcohol, but should use vinegar. I have read and heard from numerous sources not to use vinegar because it can scratch and etch the granite. I have a hard time believing what the person said, but now I am afraid to use the rubbing alcohol too.

Re: granite counter top people come in!

  • I have a hard time getting my granite clean with a DIY cleaning product.  I use soap, but it leaves a filmy residue behind.  I can't stand that so I don't use homemade stuff for my counters.  I will have to look up the name of the stuff I use.

  • Rubbing alcohol an break down the sealant and you'll have to seal your counters more often. There is a special cleaning solution my mom used for her granite and it worked beautifully. If youre interested, fb me and Ill ask her. Im not sure if a DIY would work but I imagine vinegar is better than rubbing alcohol...
  • I use Lysol kitchen spray to disinfect.  I just use a damp/soapy sponge otherwise.

  • The only thing I've ever been satisfied with is the Pledge Multi-surface cleaner spray. Everything else I tried seemed to leave a residue or was streaky.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I am going to stick to the soapy dish cloth, and just try to dry it off each time (a pain, but hopefully not streaks). I may just buy the method granite cleaner.

Crystal- you aren't supposed to use vinegar because it's acidic, so it can etch and dull the granite (or any natural stone) as can any type of acidic cleaner. I'm seeing so many recommendations for rubbing alcohol though. But I believe that it could strip the sealer, that makes sense.

  • Yeah, I think it's best to not use the rubbing alcohol or vinegar if you can avoid it... It would suck to have to reseal your granite over and over... maybe you can do regular dish soap and then a couple times a week go over it with the granite cleaner (to save on the cost of the cleaner) to get it shiny and residue free.

This is what we use as well. I really like the Lysol kitchen spray and it doesn't leave residue or anything (and we have dark black granite counter tops)
