Hi there,
We're moving to Memphis because of FI's job. Actually, he's already in Memphis living in temp housing while we try to sell our respective houses in Atlanta. We don't plan on being in Memphis for more than a few years so we've decided to spend less on a house than what we paid in Atlanta in order to use this time to save money. The problem is, we're having trouble finding a neighborhood we like w/ houses under 200K. We went to Arlington but it was too far out (he works by the airport). So far, we like Bartlett the best, but we've heard that it's "going down hill." But we really don't know if that's true or what that really means.
Any input would be appreciated!
Re: Moving to Memphis
Try east Memphis
Look for key words like White Station Schools. You aren't going to find anything under 160k and if you do.... you don't want to live there.
Zip codes
38117
38120
We looked for our second house for 2 yrs before finding anything. We still own a wonderful home in Midtown (we rent it out). We finally decided to build out in Hernando MS. We love it. It is a bit of a drive for DH who works downtown in Memphis but it was worth the drive for the peice and quiet.
I just moved away from Memphis, but I will try to help you. I would not go with Bartlett. The only 2 cities in Shelby county I would think about would be Collierville or Germantown. Have you looked into Tipton County? You can get nice homes with more yard there. Specific towns would be Atoka, Brighton, and Munford. Also look in northern MS, like Olive Branch. They would be super close to the airport, but not in the city.
Hope that helps! Just be very careful of where you do buy.
Hi! I recently moved to Millington, TN. (which is about 15 minutes from Memphis- depending on which way you go). We are about 20 minutes from the mall, the town is small, but it is growing on me. The houses here are very reasonable. My husband works for the Department of Defense (he is finve minutes from his office on the Navy Base), so we will be here as long as we want to.
We also looked for houses in Munford and Atoka both small towns as well, they are not the pretty areas of Germantown or Collierville, but they are a lot cheaper and still nice. They are a little bit further out though. Covington is a pretty little town that is about 20 minutes from Millington- a good 30-35 minutes from Memphis.
Back to Millington... I was very unsure about this place at first. Seemed kinda redneck... it got hit baaad with the ugly fashion stick... we have a super wal-mart, a Starbucks, and a McAllister's.. so I think I am going to survive.
I recently opened a dance school and a photography studio here and the community has really embraced both of my businesses with open arms. I have seriously met the sweeetest people on the face of the Earth through my work. Makes this small town feel more and more like "home" each day.
Our house is small (about 1200 sq feet) but we paid less than $100k for it and it is just the two of us... plus it sits on about 2.25 acers of beautiful land so our two dogs are in heaven. It is very quiet here but we are less than 3 minutes from town. Lots of really really pretty houses going up around us that we have our eyes on when we decide to start a family. Some cute little subdivisions around here too.
Anyway, good luck!

I'm not really sure why everyone keeps saying Bartlett is such a bad area. Collierville & Germantown are both nice, but everything is extremely overpriced.
We have lived in Bartlett for almost 5 years; my husband for most of his life. Our children go to their schools. I love it. Shopping is close & it's not that far from downtown.
If you're still looking at houses, please reconsider Bartlett. I think it's a great place to live.
If I remember right, Quail Ridge is a pretty nice little area. My husband lived in a nice apartment complex on the golf course (right next to the subdivision) before we got married and bought our house.
It is near a lot of stores and the interstate too!
He never had any issues with crime or anything either.

My husband and I moved to Memphis/Cordova area about 2 years ago. We've been looking through neighborhoods for almost a year now and I've got to tell you...Bartlett is not a bad place to be. No matter what city, collierville/germantown/bartlett....you will run into some places that have bad neighborhoods. We are officially starting to look for a home with a realtor and after all of this time, we've come to realize that bartlett is the place for us. You want to go into East bartlett....more toward arlington but not as far. There are a lot of nice areas but you just have to be patient and look. My husband is an Air traffic controller and works close to the airport as well.....so i know what you mean that arlington is too far. We have found a few nice areas in bartlett and we're on a similar buget.
Hope this helps:)
saving this post b/c we may be headed to Memphis, too.
lots of good info
