Detroit recommendations?

I just found out I have to go to Detroit by myself for work in a few weeks. I'll be there four nights. Anyone have any recommendations on things they've enjoyed to do in the city? Any great restaurants or can't miss activities?

Re: Detroit recommendations?

  • Let me ask my brother, he spent many weeks in Detroit when he was with Chrysler.

Thanks Kris. My coworker has to go to the same training, and my boss won't let us go together. She gets to go to Phoenix later in the year, while I get Detroit in August. No fair...I'd much prefer Phoenix.

  • Are you staying right in downtown?

I use to go there for my last job all the time. You can go to greektown casino for some good people watching.

I always like to go to Pizza Papalis right in the "greektown" section of town. By the Casino obviously. Had many a good times at the Old Shillelagh also in that area of town. There use to be this little greek bakery right by Pizza Papalis also. Can't think of the name.

Not sure if the Tigers are in town but I once went to a game by myself. Nice stadium.

Again all this depends if you stay in town.

I met my hubby at Cobo hall there.... so I have a fondness for the town. lol.

  • Also not sure if you would want to go bowling by yourself.... but they have this neat place called Garden Bowl. Bettis had a charity thing there during the XL superbowl. We've gone there with groups. Again lots of good sights.

  • we had a great pizza in greek town, at http://www.pizzapapalis.com/Home.aspx.  Quality ingredients. We didn't go deep dish, but a thin crust. It was so good.

We went to that bakery too- and probably the Old Shillelagh, they had a beer Kev really liked from Ireland he couldn't get back here.  I just didn't know the name of the place.

Too funny! Oh yes my co-workers and I ended up there a few nights and then had early mornings. Oh my young and single days. Ha.

  • Also I always feel safe on the people mover...... but mainly used with others or daylight when by myself.
  • I lived in Detroit for 5 years. My tops:

-If you're there on a Saturday, you must visit Eastern Market. It's like the Strip District times 25.

-Slows BBQ. I would crawl to Michigan on my hands and knees to get their food.

-Heidelberg Project. Cool art installation in a block of houses.

-Roast, if you're into having a fancy dinner.

-Somerset Collection. A mall so damn fancy, it's not even called a mall.

-Speaking of the Garden Bowl, the Majestic Cafe (part of the same complex) has excellent food

-Eat some Thai food somewhere. Their Thai food is exponentially better than any Thai food here. The menus are much larger. I like Sala Thai and Bangkok Cuisine Express.
