My dad just lost his job...
So my dad just lost his job after working at a company for +12 years... he called me and asked me what's the next step for him? I told him to fill out the PA unemployment claim online... Anyone else know what else he could apply for? He is devastated and I wish I had more answers for him...
Thank you!
Re: My dad just lost his job...
I'm very sorry to hear this. Unemployment is going to be the only compensation he'll be able to get. I recommend that he have the funds directly deposited into his bank account and DO NOT opt for the debit card (way too many fees). He should also look into info from his former employer about his healthcare coverage (when is he covered until?) and the cost of extending his COBRA. Again, I'm sorry.
I am sorry to hear this. Yes, applying for UE online is the first step.
I don't believe he would be eligible for any sort of Medicaid coverage through DPW at this point, especially if he is collecting unemployment. I know there are income restrictions, etc. You can probably check out the DPW website to find out exactly what the criteria is to be elligible for Medicaid, etc.
If your mom/dad's spouse (not sure of your situation) has health insurance through their employer, he would be able to get on their insurance now since it is a change of life situation.
COBRA coverage can be pricey. He may also be able to continue any sort of group life insurance, etc. on his own for a small premium. Again, he should check with the company's HR department about this.
Once again, I am sorry to hear of your dad's situation and hope he is able to find a new job quickly.
