Names on backpack....yay or nay
So, I see all of these PB kids and ll bean catalogs with names embroidered on backpacks and lunch bags but to me, this seems like it would be making the kid a great Target for strangers/predators. "Come here Johnny....your mom wanted me to pick you up because she was running late, eyc"

I understand why that's a precaution to take...but...when are kids alone at school? I have a school aged child and he's never alone. We stand with him at the bus stop, teachers stand outside of the school when the bus arrives, his daycare (or I ) meet his bus after school. So there's never a time when a "predator" could call him away from us. Same with Brody - he takes a backpack to daycare where we pick him up/drop him off.
I guess if you're travelling or the child is using it at an amusement park or something and they get separated from the group, it could be a risk. But, I think the risk would be just as equal as if they didn't have something with their name on it.
I would tend to agree b/c I know my paranoid parents would've thought it a safety concern. Yet, I see Amber's point too.
I agree... I remember hearing that for the first time on Kate +8 and I was like, are you kidding lady? Your kids are constantly tracked by cameras + there are 8 of you so do you really think someone is going to take one?
Anyway, I always lean towards the less protective side of things. Caileigh has her first name on her backpack & initials on her lunch b/c daycare requires you to put their name on stuff so the teachers know who's is who. By the way, you will find that in many schools the kid has to put their bus or walker number on their shirt or backpack so the teachers/bus drivers know where there are supposed to go.

I wouldn't buy one only because I'm too cheap to pay for a backpack with her name embroidered on it.
If cost wasn't an issue, I would. We have to put names on everything, including clothing for Olivia's preschool, but she's never alone. We also stress to Olivia never to go with anyone except mummy or daddy, not that she completely understands, but instilling that information early isn't a bad thing.
I can definitely see your concern.
When I was growing up, we always had a "magic" word that only someone with permission to pick us up would know. Maybe doing something like that will make it easier.
My 5-year-old niece is all about her name on everything right now. She even wants my MIL to embroider her name on her new curtains, LoL.
Ditto. Personally though, I wouldn't do it for my own kids. If we need to mark her things, we can mark an inside tag or something.
I agree. I think people give up way too much info to strangers these days. All I have to do is look at your car and I can see what your daughter's name and where she takes gymastics.
I agree with this.
that's exactly why I deleted my Call me Maybe ringtone, and peeled the N'Sync bumper sticker off of my car recently. People were just drawing way too many conclusions about me.

I'm torn on this as well. (And I'm a pretty laid back parent who doesn't worry about much.)
I will say that I HATE the car stickers with the kids' names on them for the concerns everyone else is stating. But on the backpack thing - I wouldn't have so much of a problem with it if the bag was being used just for school.
