Workout partner?

Since hubby has started working second shift, I've decided to use my "free time" to focus on working out and trying to get back in shape. I've found I do better when I have someone holding me accountable. Monday night, I did a five mile walk with my mom, but she normally walks in tr mornings and prefers doing that. Tonight, I did a seven mile bike ride with MIL. This went well, but we don't live too close to each other and it's a pain trying to transport bikes! We'll probably try and get together a couple of times a week to ride together.

I'd like to try and start running again. Once I get back in te groove of it, I can enter in different races to keep myself motivated to keep going. BUT it's just so hard to get up and start! I thought about trying couch to 5 or 10 K. I've heard this is a great way to start running again. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is anyone interested in being my running partner?! We could hold each other accountable for completing each weeks program or something!

Re: Workout partner?

  • Couch to 5k is a great program, I definitely recommend it. I signed up for a half marathon and am going to to start serious training when I get back from my honeymoon. I need motivation help too! We can still keep eachother accountable even though we are doing different programs :-)

  • I tried couch to 5k and didn't mind it even though I hate running. I stopped because it became difficult to settle into a routine.

My brother runs marathons and is really good at it, (as in he often finishes first). His advice to me when I started couch to 5k was to work on your endurance first and then work on your speed. So when you have to do your runs just work on getting through the 90 seconds (or however long) even if it's a really slow jog, and slowly try to get faster. HTH!

Edit: Also, I saw a friend on FB who signed up for Nike+. I'm not intirely sure how it works, but your runs post on FB and friends can cheer you on while you run. Sounds like good motivation if you can't find a running partner!

  • I don't run, but I ride. This summer I have been pretty lackidascial (sp?) about it. I used to average 20 miles a ride, and once a week do 40-50 mile rides. I like to track my rides on MapMyRide. You can do this with runs as well on MapMyRun. If you carry your cell phone with you and you download the app and use it with gps (on your phone), it records distance, speed, and even calories burned. You can also see what friends are doing as well, plus find routes others have mapped.

So, even though I don't run, I will be your riding "partner." It's definitly hard to find that motivation for sure! But we can keep each other accountable either way.

  • Great advice, thanks ladies! I'm going to get the Couch to 5K app and see how it goes!  I also like the ideas of Nike+ and MapMyRun, so I'll look into those!  I'm glad they will be others around to keep me motivated!

  • I am doing a half marathon in one month (YIKES!!!) and having been training like a lunatic lately.  The gal at the gym last night told me she is envious.  Me....I'm just tired already!!

I would be happy to be your run partner.  I HATE running.  Yes I know.  Doing a half marathon, dumb idea for one who hates to run.  But it is for an excellent cause and my mom and I have been doing it for years.  I think the endurance part is right.  Just build up to where you would like to be and not push yourself more than you need.  Your body will tell you when it's quitin' time.  Listen!  Start off on a slower pace and just see how long you can go.  Keep that distance for a week or so and then push yourself a little each week.  That is how I train for our marathon.  I'm up to 6 miles right now.  Hoping tonight actually to do 7 miles.

Let me know if you want to partner up!  GL
