Update from u/s today...

First, let say thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers, and encouragement.  We are no where near out of the woods.  I also must say that Dr. Jackson and the team at West Penn are FANTASTIC.  They were straight forward, sympathetic, and honestly some of the nicest docs that I've worked with so far.  They also had wonderful things to say about my OB's, and my RE's.  So, they were great...

Now onto the not-so-good news.  First we went over all genetics and they did a pedigree chart for DH and I.  She noted that she saw nothing in our immediate family to cause concern and that our cystic fibrosis test was also found to be negative.  I brought along with me all of our test results from our RE, which included karyotyping and recurrent pregnancy loss tests.  All of our previous genetic testing have all come back normal.

We went over the probability of downs syndrome and trismony 18.  Which are very scary, but I agreed that we would be tested if the doctor felt that we needed it.

Once we started the ultrasound, the doc. was concerned.  She stated that the babies head is in a figure 8 shape, it starts out wide, comes in again and then goes out again.  This looks as though the brain is not forming inside the skull.  The stomach is also protruding, where the umbilical cord would be forming, leading the doc to believe that some intestines or other body parts maybe forming outside the baby.  She discussed with us that it is still early in our pregnancy and this could change, but that she is very concerned and had it not take us 4 years to get to this point, she would be having a different discussion with us.

So, we will go back in two weeks to see what the baby looks like and will take it from there.  She discussed with us, quality of life, and the probability of the baby not making it full term because of complications.  We will need to make a decision in two weeks if thins are still the same about termination or the risks involved.  We will also need to discuss the probability of this occurring again.

Doc explained that this is called a neural tubal defect and occurs during weeks 2-4 when the spinal column and brain is being formed.  There is nothing we can do to change the outcome or what happened.  DH and I are discussing if this will be the end and we will actually continue along with our adoption process and actually go back to using birth control.  I just don't think I can take one more loss.

    My three sons!

  • I'm so sorry to hear this.  You are in my thoughts.
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's so unfair. I really hope they see something different in a few weeks. A friend of mine was told there was an 85% chance her son was going to have some kind of genetic problem based on scans and a CVS test, and he's perfect. It does happen sometimes. I pray that's the case for you.

  • I'm so sorry, Tiffany.  I'll be keeping you and your baby in my thoughts.
  • i will be thinking about all of you and praying that your baby continues to thrive and be quite the little fighter and miracle.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • Tiffany, I will add you and your baby to a few prayer chains that I know of.  I hope you are able to find peace with whatever the outcome is.  I am glad you feel confident and comfortable with your doctors.
