Buy or Rent

We are looking to rent a house for 2 years then we will buy our house. What kinds of things should we look for in renting a house? Any advice is needed. We have also never decorated or been shopping for furniture so this will all be new!

Re: Buy or Rent

  • Well, renting a house, I'd look for:

    -amount of rent per month

-do you have to pay any/all utilities?  Electric, gas, water, etc?  What do these bills average?

    -minimum length of the lease

-are you responsible for upkeep of the house: mowing the grass, shoveling, etc?

    -can you paint/hang photos?

-How much is the security deposit?

-Is parking included?  How many spaces?

    -Is it furnished/not furnished?

    -Are appliances included?

    -Do they allow pets?

As far as decorating/furniture shopping goes, I wouldn't spend a ton of money and keep it to a minimum since there is no way of knowing whether it is going to fit in with the decor at the house you eventually buy, or if the furniture will fit.

  • PP listed a lot of great questions to ask.

Also, ask about liability/maintenance. Like PP suggested, you want to ask about snow removal, mowing the grass, etc. but what about if something breaks? Who's responsible? get EVERYTHING in writing.

Ask about breaking the lease agreement (if you sign for 12 months, but for whatever reason, cannot pay rent or want to leave by month 9... what happens?) Also, if you sign a 12-month lease, what happens when it's finished? Some places ask you to sign another 12-month agreement, while others is month-to-month after the first 12 months.

Good luck finding a house to rent! Smile
