** Amanda **

Who did you use for movers again? I have our PM convo about cost, but I didn't see the name of the company :)

Re: ** Amanda **

  • It was Don Farr, our cost estimate they did was a lot lower than our actual expense which in part was due to them quoting us for an off peak time move and we ended up moving it up into a peak window.  They also packed us up. Which to me was priceless.  hahaha. Overall we were happy with the job though. There were a couple minor annoyances, but experience on our part and a little less trust would have eliminated that.

ETA- I also have a friend who used South HIlls Movers for his move and was happy and another whose parents used two men and a truck and were happy too.

  • Butting in - Mandy, with where you're located, I wanted to also mention Sigmund Transfer. Amber recommended them, as her BFF that lives out your way had used them for their move. We used them a couple of years ago and were very pleased. We did not have them pack our stuff, so I don't know what that costs, but their cost for moving all our stuff that we packed was reasonable. Good luck!
  • Thanks girls! I plan to get a few estimates so this helps. At this point I'm thinking I just want them to move our furniture and the appliances we're taking, but we'll see if that changes. I'm mostly concerned about DH and his crew damaging my stuff. I already lost a ceramic trash can I got for the powder room when DH was just moving things from one side of the garage to the other. He's fast but careless!

Just keep in mind (or be sure to ask), most companies have minimum times.  And they work FAST.  So if you only have furniture and appliances and it takes them 2 hours, you'll probably still be charged for the 4-6 hour minimum most companies seem to have. And if that's the case, you're better off having them move even more of your stuff since you're paying for it anyway!!

  • Interesting, I didn't realize that! Was it you that said they're pretty picky about how things are packed or padded (in the case of furniture)?
  • we didn't experience any damage in our furniture or TVs when we moved aside from one inexpensive shelf had a minor problem that we were not upset over. everything else arrived without any scratches or breaks.  Including our IKEA stuff, which we were worried about being able to handle the move at all.

Yes.  They will pad things for you (like the furniture) but as far as packing up your stuff, they will want everything IN an actual container.  The company will probably give you specific guidelines, too, about how and what to pack.

  • We just used Don Farr this weekend to move us out and were very happy with them.  We packed all of our smaller items ourselves and left all the big furniture/appliances to them to breakdown/pack/wrap/move.  As far as packing of items, they told us it was completely up to us how much we wanted to pack and if there were items that we didn't box that needed to be they would handle that.   I had a bunch of Aaron's toys that didn't fit easily in a box so just left them out for them to deal with and had no problems.  They work purely on an hourly rate so the more you leave for them to pack up- the more time it will take- that's all.  Oh and they charge you based on the time to move you out and count on that as the time to move you in- for us it was about 6 hours to move out, so we were charged an addtional 6 hours to move us into the new house.  If it takes them 5 hours, we still pay for 6 but if it takes them 7 we still only pay for 6.  I felt there prices were very reasonable.

I know you are counting on a move from your current house to the new house but *IF* it gets delayed, they offered us 3 months of free storage in their warehouse at no additional cost.  We are currently in an apt with our stuff in storage for a month so that was a huge selling point to me!
