In need of opinions and support...

Hi everyone! So it is 2pm the day after I got the offer and I still don't have any paperwork. I emailed the P saying "Do you forsee any problems getting approval? I just want to make sure there will be no problems before telling my employer I found another job. Should I wait until you hear back from the main office? Please let me know. Thanks again.". Her response was "It is really just a formality, but you can wait 24 hours if you prefer. I will call you the second I receive an email."

In the meantime I went to my job at the childare this morning and they asked me if I got the job. My honest self told them as long as it is approved by main office I have it and I would have to start next week. Later on lunch my bosses assistant started asking me more questions about it. I just kept answering them and ended up telling her I would not be giving a 2 week notice. Then my phone rang so I went outside to talk, it was my friend. I talked to her about how I got hired and would probably make tomorrow my last day, not thinking twice about being right outside my bosses window.

When I got back inside my boss asked me if I was back from lunch. I told her I was and then she said she had to talk to me. She pulled me aside and told me she had just gotten off the phone with the school and given them a reference for me. She said they asked her if it was policy to give a two week notice and if she knew I was not intending on giving her one. On top of that my boss told me she heard my whole phone conversation. As a result she told me I was no longer needed and probably lost the job I just got hired for.

Now, my bosses name and phone number are NOT listed on my resume anywhere! The school would have had to look up the phone number and then call them, but why would they call a child care. Plus they already offered me TWO positions yesterday and submitted the one to the main office. Why would a P call references AFTER submitting the final offer to the main office and why would she call ones that are NOT teaching references that are NOT listed on your resume?

I think what happened is when I left the building for 8 mins to take the phone call from my friend, my boss overheard me AND her assistant told her what I said about not giving a two week notice. I don't think she ever talked to the school. I think she is just making that up. She is the type of person who wouuld do that.

What are your opinions? Do you think it is likely she talked to the school? If she did talk to the school about my not giving a two week notice do you think it would cost me the job?

Any opinions and words of support are welcome.

  • I think your day care boss is full of it. You just received an offer for teaching, why would they recind the offer because you didnt give 2 weeks notice? I also find it hard to believe that the school would search out your bosses information to contact them and if they did I would find it in very poor taste. When I have an applicant that I am doing referrences for I call the ones they give me and only call their current employer if they have indicated that I can do so.

Your day care boss is just being a bully, I say good riddence to her and hello new job!

  • I completely agree with Amity.  It sounds to me like your daycare boss is just being mean.  I'm new to the hiring world from the boss's point of view, but I would never search out a reference/employer that wasn't listed.  While a two week notice is preferred in the business world, in many states you are not required to give that.  Oklahoma is an at-will employment state meaning I can quit any day I want without notice and they can fire me any day they want without notice.  Two weeks is not required.

Deep breath!  I'm sure you'll hear back soon from your new job about the paperwork.
