"Winging it"

When it comes to International Travel, have you ever "winged it?"

Or are you a plan-every-detail kind of person?

Re: "Winging it"

  • 99% of the time I plan every last minute detail of a trip.

However, a few years ago I took a solo trip to Europe at the last minute. The only item I had planned ahead of time prior to leaving for the two week trip was my lodging for the first three nights in Amsterdam. Otherwise, the rest of the trip I just winged it, including the actual cities I would visit! It was a very liberating and freeing experience that I enjoyed immensely at the time. I was going through a divorce and the trip was the best thing I've ever done for myself!

I don't think I would ever "wing" a trip like that again but I am glad that I can say that I have had that experience!

  • As much as I love to plan every detail, some places we've traveled to in the past was too rural to plan.  They had no internet so I had to take reviewer's words that I would be able to find lodging.  The lodging were not the best in the world (some the worse I've been) but the place itself, or the trek to get there, usually unforgettable.  When DH and I backpack, it's too tough to plan out every detail.  But when we are in a major city or major tourist destination, sure, I try to plan more so I don't miss what is on my "must-see" list.

  • that really all depends on where I'm going. i've never been a 'down to the minute' planner but always know where i'm staying and generally have some ideas of what to do.

Wow, how cool that you did that! Must've felt crazy good to just go cause you wanted to and could, lol, good for you!  Gosh, I don't think I'd be gutsy enough, but you never know what certain circumstances will push you to do...haha.

  • Lyra, believe it or not, but I haven't traveled internationally yet... Embarrassed.  I plan on it though!  So generally speaking, I'm usually a pretty good planner, my H is very anal about having things "planned", so I don't think he'd do too well just winging it, haha!

  • I've done my fair share of 'winging'.

My first trip to Morocco, for example, I had a loose itinerary of cities/towns I wanted to see, but I only really booked 5 nights accommodation for a month long trip.  Looking back, it's kind of a miracle it all worked out.

  • No, but I am open to it....DH on teh other hand likes to plan.

I met someone once who went to Europe on their honeymoon and winged it...THAT I wouldnt do!!

  • In the past I've always been somewhere in between.  For short vacations we would have the lodgings booked ahead, but not necessarily all the daily activities planned out.  For the trip we are on now it's just not possible to plan too much in advance for everything.  In India (where we are now) we realized we do have to make a route at least to make sure we can get train tickets, and we're always thinking a little about where the next country will be, but we prefer to leave things open when we can.
We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

I generally plan where we'll be each day, just because we usually travel on a budget, so I need to figure out accommodations ahead of time to save money.  Or we need to figure out transportation logistics.  Or there are certain activities that we need to sort out.  However, for a lot of trips I only figure out one of these things in advance.

I've definitely done trips like Scotland where all I planned in advance was a flight and a rental car, and we sorted everything else out as we went.  It looks like my trip to Iceland in a few weeks will be similar.  We have flights and a car, and because we arrive at 10:30pm, we'll book our first night before we leave, but other than that we're free to do what we want.  The entirety of the plan right now is that we have 10 days to make it around the circle road and get back to Reykjavik before the flight out. Where we go and what we do will be on the fly.

  • loved the feedback ladies. for our upcoming Argentina trip, besides the lodging and flights booked, we are sort of going to "wing" it. a little:) will let you all know how it turns out!
  • I never really consider it winging it if I have accommodations booked in advance. Maybe I'm too hard on myself!

So the above trip went from being "only flights and cars booked" to a detailed itinerary with plans for what to do every day down to a few hours! It turns out that there aren't enough rooms in rural Iceland, and since my boyfriend didn't bring camping gear, we had to put together a schedule around places we could find a room (any room)!  So much for my attempt to be laid back and unplanned!
