Holy moly

I applied for a bunch of school jobs on Monday. Yesterday I got calls from 2 different schools requesting "initial phone screenings" before they start real interviews.

The first one sucked. The second one went really well.... so well that the principal called me a half hour later for an interview and now they are checking my references ASAP and then may hire me since new teachers have to report to work July 30 Indifferent

Taking this job means we'd move from Philly to Florida... 18 hours. This has me excited and terrified, but the position sounds like what I wanted to do when picking my degree.

My only reservation is I applied to my old high school for a job that I was really hoping to get. I've heard nothing from them though so I'm wondering if I even had a chance. The perk of it was we'd still be close to both our families and I'd be at a school I'm familiar with and have wanted to work at (though I'd be teaching a different subject). I would kick myself a little if they called me after I accepted this FL position. At the same time though I probably shouldn't wait around.

This new job will probably pay more though and I'd be doing exactly what I went to school for. I'm just nervous about going into unfamiliar territory.

I should take this job offer and be grateful I got one after 3 years of searching, right?

ETA: I called the school less than a half hour ago to give them references. One of my references just called to let me know she just got off the phone with them, less than a half hour after I called. This is going very fast...

Re: Holy moly

  • How exciting! Is it the fast past that is scaring you? It would freak me out if I was waiting for years to get the job I wanted.

Where in Florida would you be?

ETA: Schools in the southern states are on a slightly different time table. I don't know of any school that starts after Labor Day.

  • Just outside Tampa and yes, it's how fast it's going that scares me! I'd have to be down there in a week and a half to start! But it's because they really need someone quick since they start earlier than up north.

I've been researching stuff just to get an idea of how doable this will be, and it looks very doable. We can get a 2-3 bedroom condo for the price we're renting our house at right now. The base salary is 3 times as much as I make right now in retail. I called my mom up (she was a teacher and now a college professor in education) so she advises students on finding jobs. She says go for it. She also told me about a few more-distant family members I apparently have down there that would help me out. I'll probably move down first and H will follow when we've got everything wrapped up in PA.

Worst case scenario, I don't love it and we move back after a few years. But then I'll have the experience I need to get a job up here (since it's why I kept getting turned down). So as long as I can make it through a year or two (God help me if I hate it that much that I can't finish a school year) it's a win-win situation.

    Cross your fingers for me!!!!

  • Holy crap!!!  How exciting and terrifying at the same time!!  I'm sure I've missed a post - what does your husband do for a living?  I admire people that can move that far from family and friends and start a whole new life!  I don't think I could move that far away from my family!

I actually got an e-mail yesterday from a company that saw my resume on Indeed.com.  It was for the company called Danaher Corporation for a HR Generalist position.  The kicker was that it's located in West Chester, PA!  We live in Indy right now, but the e-mail said full relocation was offered.  I haven't responded to the lady yet, but I can't see myself moving that far away!  I think I would be very unhappy being that far away from my family.  I sarcastically asked DH if wanted to move to West Chester, PA, and he was like sure!  Granted, I told him that it appeared that West Chester is close to Coatesville, and he has a friend that lives out there.

Good luck to you, and hope you hear soon!

Small world. I went to West Chester University. I loved it there. Really nice area. I also observed at a school in Coatesville, an easy ride from WC. If you decide to consider it let me know and I can answer any questions you have ;)

H works at a bank right now so we figured there's banks everywhere so he can move. Ideally he wants to move into accounting eventually, but he can find a new bank job to start.

I think that if you get the job offer, you should call your old high school and ask them if there is interest in you, letting them know that another offer has come in, but that you are more interested in working for them.  That way you'll know if they were interested before you accept the other position.

This exactly! Thought I might even call them NOW to just check in on the status of the hiring process.

You having a job offer on the way might even make you seem more desirable to them!

If you don't hear from your high school, though, I think you should go for it! Congratulations!!!!

I was thinking this but didn't know how to put it into words.

I am not familiar with the city of Tampa itself. I like the surrounding areas. There are so many nice beaches a short drive away and quiet a bit to do and see.

  • Wow! Congratulations! It does sound like it's happening rather quickly, but that means they obviously loved you and don't want to lose you. And while it's scary to think of moving so far away - just think... you get to live in Florida! It would be such a great experience for you and DH.

And I agree with the others - call your school to check in and tell them point blank why you're calling.

  • Personally, I probably wouldn't call your old school unless you know someone.  Everything I ever hear is that it puts people off you because they already have so many applicants.  I know it isn't like that in other careers, but teaching is SO different.  Maybe ask your mom what she thinks though-I bet she'd have great insight.

I know that it would be tough to move so far away, but I also think that you should do it if you can! Like you said, if you aren't happy, move back in a year or two (but be sure to give it ample time).  At that point, you will have some experience and maybe some more older teachers will have retired so you could find something.  Plus, you'd have the advantage of having a job while you looked.  You could look just for what you want and not feel like you had to take anything that opened up.

Congrats Dee!!!!! Just remember (my motto for the summer as I struggle through the idea of moving away from the job I've had for 5 years and friends I love)-everything happens for a reason!  If this weren't meant to be, you wouldn't be getting the job.  It may not be your dream job or place to live, but you are supposed to gain something from it, you just may not know exactly what yet.  I'm so happy for you!!!

  • Good luck Dee! I sure hope this works out for you. Maybe a change of scenery wouldn't be a bad thing and for sure the winters would be better there than in the north :) I hope everything works out for you!
  • How exciting, happy to hear that you heard back from a school and what's better than Florida in the winter..I keep telling DH we need to move someplace warmer!

I'm originally from IL and have lived on the east coast now for 4 years about 15 to 16 hours away from my family and now only a couple of hours away from DH's family. It was kind of hard at first to be that far from home but I moved straight out of college and wasn't married and didn't know anyone, so it was a little different. Remember they are only a plane flight away and you can get there when needed!

Good luck on your decision I think it is a great opportunity to teach what you went to school for and plus the pay would be a great bonus!!

  • That sounds great!  Congratulations!  Did you check out the area around the school?  Is it a nice area?

I was tempted to say you should call the local school as well, but maybe your mom can offer some insight.  Do you know anyone at the school at all?  It might be worth contacting the school somehow, especially if you would prefer to stay close to home.  It would be pretty crazy to make the arrangements for FL and then get a call from the local school for an interview.

It's exciting, though!  The fast pace makes it seem kind of crazy... but it sounds like a fun time right now!  You guys seem to be in a good spot in life to make a move like this.

  • Woot woot! Congrats that is amazing news!!
  • I accepted the position.
    AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I decided on my own to go for it, then when I called my parents I discussed it more with my mom and she agreed. I figured as much as I'd love to work at my old HS, it's not as practical since it's not what my degree is in and you can't really do much with religion/theology teaching experience and there's a much more limited amount of schools to teach at.

Soooooo I have to move to Florida in a little over a week. Whoa. I have a million things to do. And I don't even know where to start on lesson plans and stuff. I hope that becomes clearer once I get to the school because I'm a little terrified I'm going to be in over my head, but I assume every first-year teacher thinks that :P

  • Congrats!!!!

  • WooHoo! How exciting! Congratulations Dee! Good luck on the move and I hope you grow to love it there in Florida.
  • YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!! HOORAY DEE!!! Congrats :)

  • I keep going back and forth between being really excited and really overwhelmed.

I'm moving 1000 miles away to start a new career by myself. AHHHHHH.  H and I finally talked it over today (I got the job at 2:30 yesterday, had to work 3-10 and then again today 7-3. NO time to discuss anything!) and we have a sort-of plan. The earliest H can possibly move down is August 15 (he'll miss my birthday, boo!), but in reality I think it will be closer to September. It depends on if he decides to just give his 2 weeks at his current job and move without having a new job lined up or if he wants to wait and look for a job first.

He has no clue what he wants to do and I don't want to push him yet because he's kinda freaking out over the idea of putting himself out there to find a job (he hated the job process last time). Then he felt bad when he realized that's exactly what I just did but with a really short time limit too :-P

I'm calling apartments tomorrow in hopes someone has something available by next weekend. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! :)
