We were planning on taking a trip to Wisconsin Dells for our anniversary weekend - nothing huge, but we wanted to just get away - but then found out last night that his sister is planning a surprise party for their dad's birthday that weekend. (Despite her knowing we were planning a trip that weekend... but that's a whole other issue!)
Every other weekend in August AND September is too busy to take a mini-vaca, so I'm thinking we need to do a day trip somewhere, but I'm at a loss of where to go/what to do. Chicago is my last choice - been there done that numerous times. And I don't want to just do dinner and a show or anything like that.
I want to do something fun and summer-y since we both have birthdays in winter and never get to celebrate outside. I would love something on the lake - perhaps Lake Geneva?
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Re: Anniversary Trip - Northern IL/Southern WI
I agree with PP in maybe not totally ruling out the Dells and just making it a different type of trip (more romantic) than it would be with family. Indulge in a spa, couples massages, nice meals out, etc.
Or you mentioned Lake Geneva and we've stayed at and really enjoyed the Grand Geneva before. We go up frequently for day trips too to do some shopping. They also have paddle boating, lots of different boat trips on the lake, nice dinners out, etc. In fact for our anniversary next year, we plan to go to Lake Geneva.
Another option is to maybe explore some of the Northern Illinois wineries. You could take a weekend to drive to different ones, and depending which ones you go to, stay at a hotel nearby.
ETA: I just caught that you are now only wanting a day trip. I think Lake Geneva and the wineries could both be day trips. Lots of stuff up at the lake to do (shopping, sightseeing, paddle boating, etc) that you could do in one day.
