Fiance called off wedding

My ex fiance and I got engaged after a year of dating. We had been engaged for almost a year, the wedding was three months away, when he unexpectedly showed up at my house and told me it was over. Our relationship was wonderful. I didn't see any signs. We were so happy together and seemed so in love. It was like people say, I knew right away that he was the man I would marry. Everything was going so smoothly.

Completely out of the blue, he showed up at my house and told me he was going away to become a pastor and that he could not marry me. This was extremely painful, because we had just been registering the week before and he was so excited. He never discussed this decision with anyone. So now I am left with a million unanswered questions. I don't know if it is better to try to get those answers or to just not contact him. I don't know how to heal. I am so heart broken and confused.

Re: Fiance called off wedding

  • What religious denomination is he embracing? Did he say?

Unless he is going to become a Catholic priest or is going to be a monk in a monastery, he is eligible to marry anybody he wishes.

You are right: you're confused and you have a right to be. You need closure here.

Give this a couple of weeks and then sit down and talk to him. Ask more questions and the one I'd ask would be "Why didn't you tell me a lot sooner than this?"

Wishing you luck. And hoping you get closure.

I wouldn't contact him, I would see therapist to heal my heart and move forward. It would hurt too much and not solve anything to contact him, seems like he made his choice.
  • Wow, I am so so sorry...  You should be feeling lost, confused..  I would probably take a little time to myself to just sit back and take it in.  After that yes, meet with him, and ask him what happened...  so sorry girl... best of luck. B
  • I have a similar situation to yours. 6 weeks away from our wedding, registry done, response cards and gifts already flooding in, I came home from the movies one night to my fiance standing there with a bag packed saying he wasn't ready to get married and wanted to be single and was moving out, that night!

Clearly my world got tipped upside down..you literally feel like you will die of a broken heart and want to punch the people who comfort you with "you are so much better off" But the best thing I ever did was not chase him. I cut of complete contact. I blocked him on all social media sites and had my friends do the same. I even changed my cell number so I couldnt waste time sitting by my phone wondering if tonight was the night he'd call. I call this method "How to lose a guy in 2 months" It works! I, like you, had just known he was the one for me, however once things ended and the initial shock factor wore off, I was able to see clearly all the signs that were there that I for far too long ignored, or didn't want to see.

When someone leaves your life so abrubtly without your consent you are left helpless and powerless. I didn't want to live that way. I wanted to feel in control of my own happiness and take the power back. It was hard, but quick. Take it from me, do not waste time trying to make it work. If someone can drop you like a hot potato they are not worth all that you have to give. Best of luck, stay strong, keep busy and try new things!
