When to start applying?

My husband and I are re-locating to New England from Alaska to be closer to family. When should we start looking for employment? Before we move? Or after we arrive?

Re: When to start applying?

  • What can you afford to do? Could you go a few weeks (hopefully no longer than that, but who knows) without a paycheck if you waited to apply for jobs? If I were in your situation I would at least have some applications out before moving in hopes of setting up interviews as soon as we were settled in the new area. I personally would not feel comfortable being unemployed more than 1-2 months, especially if both H and I were jobless.

ETA: I totally don't expect you to answer/post anything on here about your financial situation, but it is something to think about.

  • It is good to apply before you move (when you start to do so is your decision). You do not know how long it will take some companies to get back to you for an interview. Then if you do not get a job before you move you just keep applying once you get there.

If you are not in a rush to get a job because finances are ok you could wait. You could start networking once you get there and maybe find job leads that you wouldn't of otherwise.

  • I would start to apply before moving. Like pp said, I'm not sure of your financial situation, but at the least you should start to apply in hopes of landing some interviews for when you do get there, so that you're not out of work for too long.

  • I agree - Start applying before you move.  I've put in applications, and they've called me 3-4 weeks after I put my application in.  I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable not having a job. I also wouldn't want to drain my savings either.

  • Having done two cross-country moves, I've only ever hand luck finding employment after re-locating.
  • My DH and I are trying to relocate and are having no luck securing employment from our current location. We have been at it for a while now. Did you find employment soon after your move either time?

  • I would prior to moving. A friend of mine was relocating from Louisiana to Utah a few years back. She started faxing her resumes to offices with a cover letter explaining her situation. She ended up doing a couple of phone interviews, and actually had a job offer about a month or so before they were to move. Good luck!

Before, for sure. We moved in December. My husband works for the family business so he knew he had a job held for him in September for a December start date. I am in a very specific field with hardly any job openings (basically when someone dies or retires), so I knew I needed to apply for anything I'd want that came open. I applied for a job on Oct. 3, interviewed in November, and started December 26th, which was a week after we moved there. They worked with me...but not all jobs do that. It depends where you're going to work but it's worth a try
