Something that's really bothing me about this theater shooting

The news keeps reporting that a 3/4 month old baby is among the injured/killed and they're playing it up as so tragic.

The most tragic thing I'm seeking about that is poor judgement on the part of the parents. Who takes an infant to a midnight showing of a Batman movie? Honestly.

I mean it's really sad anyone was hurt/killed, but that baby had no reason being there.

Re: Something that's really bothing me about this theater shooting

  • Honestly, I've been thinking the same thing. Another said a 9 year old girl, and while that is older, I still find it kind of inappropriate to drag them to a midnight showing of any movie, let alone Batman. I want to throw up thinking about this whole situation. :(
  • Also, Aurora is where the hospital is that FIL passed away at.  I'm selfishly hating hearing the name over and over again.

So many of the witnessess keep saying "kids" and I've been wondering what they considered kids. I'm fine with teenagers being there. I could have totally seen my brother begging my Mom to go with his friends when he was 13. Who thinks anything is going to happen at a movie theater?

But kids that are too young to really be seeing this, let alone at midnight, just makes me angry at the parents.

While I wouldn't personally do it.  I can understand taking a 3 or 4 month old baby more than a 9 year old.  The baby was probably sleeping in its carseat.  The 9 year old would have definitely been awake.  Way past their bedtime.  Just selfish on the parents part, in my opinion.

  • I thought the same thing when I heard that a 3 month old and 9 year old had been there for the midnight showing. Then I felt guilty for even thinking about how terrible that parenting is given what happened. So sad.

  • Glad I'm not the only one thinking that...

When we went to Disneyland on Leap Day it was open for 24 hours.  It was pathetic watching parents carrying sleeping kids through the turnstiles at 3am just so they could go on a couple more rides.

Many kids see movies that are completely inappropriate in theaters and at home with their movie channels.

  • I agree with all of you. That's way too late for kids to be out. I can understand that a baby may be awake at that time, I'm sure I'm in for many sleepless nights and midnight wake ups very soon, but I sure as heck won't have my baby out that late at night, and especially not to a movie. And the 9 year old, that is just entirely too late and passed bedtime. The whole thing is so sad.

  • While I would never take my 3 month old to a movie, these parents had absolutely NO way of knowing that this was going to happen. I can't help but think that it's a way of blaming the victims kwim? Yes, poor judgment to take their baby to a movie period, but it is in no way their fault that their baby got shot.

ETA: which I know isn't what anyone was getting at, but a lot of people seem to dwelling on the parents and how horrible it was for them to bring their baby... People do it all the time and when nothing goes wrong people don't bat an eye, but these parents lost their baby, and all of a sudden, their choice is 'horrible'.

I have to agree. Poor judgement on their part, maybe. Would I do it? Probably not.  But no one should be blamed except the disgusting person who decided to open fire at the movie.

  • The whole thing is horrible. That said, I take Andy to the movies all the time and he sleeps right through.  Depending on the baby, I don't think there is anything wrong with bringing a baby to a movie at any time.  I can't imagine taking a 5-6 year old though. This is such a tragedy

  • I think I'm more annoyed at how the news is playing it up. A baby! Super-duper tragic!

It's tragic that anyone died. I don't think a baby/its parents should get any more sympathy points than anyone else that lost their lives.

Is it any of the victims' fault that they were shot yesterday?  Absolutely not.  I don't think that's what we're getting at at all.

Just because people don't say something about parenting decisions doesn't mean that people don't bat an eye at things like that.

True enough, but these people are up for public scrutiny because of what happened. As if they're not already going through hell without all the 'they should have never brought the baby in the first place' comments. The only person who should be blamed for anything is the nut case who brought his gun into a movie theatre and open fired on the place.

And really, taking a baby to a theatre is pretty low on the list of sh!t people judge each other over, and it would have continued to be that way had this never happened. I do agree with Kate though, it's terrible anyone died, not just the baby.

  • I heard this one my way to work this morning. Maybe it's pregnancy hormones but I couldn't help but cry. It's so devastating.

By the way the 3month old didn't die nor was it hurt. The parents took it in to the er to get checked because of the tear gass.

I don't think the age of ANY of these kids is important. It just as easily could have been in the middle of the day that this happened. I am 10 years older than my youngest sister and during summer vacation my parents wouldn't have batted an eye if their 19 year old daughter (me) took their 9 year old to a midnight showing.

The tragedy here is that a gunman went into a theater and destroyed many lives. I don't know why Colorado has had a string of crazy people shooting up places but it's hard to hear about it again.  I'm listening to the press conference now.

My little brother lives near there and was the first person I called this morning when I heard the news. I'm thankful that all of my family is ok and my heart goes out to all the families who lost a family member last night.

I said the same thing at work and about got shunned. I said I would never take my six year old to a midnight showing either-my six year old should be sleeping. Crucified, I tell you. "Wait until you have kids and you'll take them to a midnight showing."

I assure you my six year old can go see it the next night at 7:00 and be totally fine.

And my three month old will not be going into a theater..let alone at midnight.

Totally agree. Regardless how you look at it, that shooting shoul have never happened. And that 3 month old should have never been in that movie theater at midnight. I don't agree with bringing a baby to a movie theater and it's just somethig I would ever do. If those parents wanted too that's fine, but why in the world so late at night?!?! (granted the shooting could have happened at any point in the day though)

  • From what I understand, there was more than one baby at the movie.  The 3 mo old was treated and released, but there was another couple that was interviewed who had their 4 mo old and 4 yr old there as well.  I got the impression that there were multiple kids in the theater.

I hate that anyone died or got injured.  It's senseless and it makes me nervous that people are capable of doing such awful things.  I know you can't live your life in fear, but this will make me think twice about taking my baby certain places.

Bottom line, I don't think a rated R movie, that is so loud and that late at night is an appropriate place for children.  I am surprised the theater allowed children in there as it is - there is an age limit for a reason.

My heart breaks for everyone involved.

  • I totally agree with you Kate, that was the first thought that John and I voiced to each other. Obviously some parents don't think the same way.

This. Honestly, the noise and graphics of that movie (I just saw it last night) is what makes me side-eye bringing your children to it more than the fact that it was at midnight.

  • This really bothered me too.  Movies are so crazily loud now I can't imagine that being good for a 3 month old.  And if that baby woke up and started crying it would also be incredibly rude to all the other people in that theater to have brought the baby.  I side eye anyone who brings a baby to a movie at any time.
