vacating wins since 1998, $60 million dollars, 4 year bowl ban, and allowing transfers of current student athletes.
what is everyone's reaction?
such a severe punishment for the football program, but honestly I think it is all appropriate for what happened with the coverup of Sandusky. And it keeps from punishing the current students as much as they could.

Re: NCAA Sanctions on Penn State
I agree with you, Amanda. The only thing that surprised me was the vacating wins part, I guess I saw the other parts of the sanctions coming, but that one surprised me a bit.
I have to say (and this might be an unpopular opinion) that I am feeling for PSU fans right now. Please don't take that the wrong way and think that I'm not feeling for the victims, that's not it at ALL. But if I'm looking at them completely separately, feeling sick and just beyond sad about what happened to those kids...then looking present day, at PSU fans, I'm sure they're heartbroken.
I love Pitt and I'm proud to have gone there and proud to work here, so if something like this happened here, I would be devastated. I'd be devastated for the victims and that something so tragic happened at a place that I hold dear to my heart, and a place that I'm proud to say I have a long-standing affiliation with.

I agree with it and was glad there was no death penalty, not for the university but for the kids & the town. PSU football *is* that town in the fall and although this will still hurt their economy greatly, at least there will still be games to go to for the next 4 years even though no bowls or titles. Also I feel bad for the new coach - have to wonder how much he was told ahead of time & whether he expected all this. Feel awful for the recruits that aren't able to transfer to another school - not that many scholarships just hanging out there in July. Lastly, there are alot of other sports that rely on football money to stay afloat - women's sports mainly. So ending football would be harmful to them as well.
Lots of lives ruined and I'm not even talking about the real victims.
One bright spot is there will be a bunch of enforcement and advisory positions open at PSU right now if that's your area.

I was surprised by the vacating wins too- but it makes sense that if this was dealt with when it happened and not covered up the football program would have suffered then. But they put football ahead of the victims and those wins are tainted by that.
I understand your empathy for the Penn State fans. through all of this, someone/something they had respected turned out to have been involved in something ugly. It must be hard on them but they are not the victims in this story.
Part of the sanctions is that recruits CAN transfer and compete immediately. I am sure that some of the big recruits will land in other places. Here is a quote: "All returning and incoming Penn State football players can transfer and begin play at another school immediately, Mr. Emmert said. Additionally, any Penn State football players who wishes to stay at the university can retain their scholarships, even if they choose to no longer play football."
I agree with this. And honestly, I think that if the current players are good enough and they want to go to another school they won't have a problem. There's ALWAYS a way to find money for students that you really, really want. Especially when football is involved.
I knew that & I'm glad they let them keep their scholarships or transfer but still if you are a mid- level player and the NFL is not your destination its harder than you think to totally transfer schools get a full scholarship especially when camp starts in a few weeks. Regardless they can stay & play.

I support it completely. It's just a shame that the PSU players, unltimately, are being affected over the acts (or lack of) by the Administration.
And you're right Sheila - how many scholarships are still available at other schools right now in July for the incoming players? I saw one incoming Freshman player already decommitted since the announcement 90 minutes ago...
My three sons!
I don't know anything about college football, but I didn't think it was all that harsh. I did think they were going to suspend the football program entirely - although maybe these sanctions will be just as harmful. My concern is less for the students and more for the community, local businesses, etc. that this will impact. But if this is viewed as harsh by the football community, then hopefully it sends a strong message.
I went to Penn State but wasn't into the whole football scene (only went to 1 football game, left at half-time, they were playing USC and I thought it was the University of South Carolina, like I said, I know nothing about college football.) , and I am really devastated by this whole thing for lots of different reasons - some reasons are personal and others reasons are just dismissed by others, so it's difficult to discuss comfortably. Sadly, no matter how deserved these penalties are, they will continue to keep the focus on football. There's an opportunity to do a lot of good things here. Unfortunately, just thinking about the victims like everyone keeps saying doesn't do anything. If you want to help, I encourage anyone to look into RAINN or similar organizations to see what you can do.
The police were involved in 1998 and decided not to do an investigation.
Paterno pushed Sandusky to retire in 1999.
The powers that be (above Paterno and going on trial for perjury...some of them) let him use the PSU facilities through the early 2000s.
The governor's office is more involved than the papers will admit because his name doesn't get anyone's attention, but Paterno's sure does.
Oh, and Ray Gricar, who was going to prosecute, has been missing and now is declared dead...with his car abandoned and hard drive found floating in the Susquehana River.
There's always more to the story.
I'm a PSU alumni, proud supporter of my school and very proud supporter of Joe Paterno, the football team and Coach O'Brien.
PS- The Alumni already paid the 60M. But you won't see that on CNN or ESPN...
Google RAINN while you're at it to see what we've already done....and THON.
Good stuff doesn't make headlines....*shrugs shoulders*
