What does a security system say to a buyer?

We're thinking about putting in a security system. We live in a safe neighborhood, so it would be more for the fire monitoring. There are some sketchy areas several miles away, so we would have that peace of mind as well.

Would you look at a system as an indication of a bad neighborhood (many of the neighborhood townhouses have them) or as a bonus b/c you'd have the equipment already if you wanted the monitoring service? We bought 1.5 months ago & none of this crossed my mind when we were looking at properties. DH took the positive approach & figured it would be a selling feature.

I would consider it neutral. Enough people have them that I wouldn't take it as a sign of a problem neighborhood. (Certainly people in my neighborhood have them and I live in one of the richest counties in the country where a stolen iPod from someone's gym bag will make the local news.) OTOH, I don't really see it as a selling point because many companies will throw in free equipment as part of the package and if you have something installed, I'd have to go with that company even if the rates aren't competitive.

I don't think it's looked down upon at all! I live in the nicest neighborhood in Tampa and most of us have them; simply because nice areas are unfortunately targets for theives especially during holidays and such. I do not think a buyer would see it as either a good or bad thing.....

This completely. They're so popular that everybody has them so they don't say anything to me. They're also really cheap (or should be if you're shopping smart) that it's not a selling point in that I'm getting a feature with the house.

It says nothing to the buyer other than you like to be safe and secure. Crime knows all zip codes. Over all high crime areas tend to lean to the un-mowed yards, Multiple cars on the street, over abundance of rentals. We just closed today on our home and it has a security system. My initial response was, "oh good I don't have to have someone install one now"
