Question for flying Southwest

We fly out to SFO on Sat. and this is our first time flying Southwest. I have looked on their website and contacted someone and spoken to them, but I was hoping for a personal experience here.

It says they allow one carry-on plus one personal item onboard. We'd like to know if a duffel bag would count as a personal item (they list purses and backpacks as examples). When I called and spoke with someone, she didn't give me a yes or no and just said it's fine as long as it fits under the seat. I think ours would, but I also don't want to have to check it last minute at the gate (because if we are going to check it, I would divvy items up differently). It's about a foot long, a foot in depth, and about a foot high.

Has anyone used a bag similar to this as a personal item (we will each have a rolling carry-on suitcase too) when flying Southwest? Were you able to carry it on?

Re: Question for flying Southwest

  • it sounds just a little bigger than my backpack, and that fits under the SW seat fine.  Just don't overstuff it.

  • What are the dimensions? There's info about their restrictions in the website.

  • I would think you would be fine, but as PP says, just don't overstuff it.

  • You can check bags for free on Southwest.  Why risk not being able to put it under your seat or having to gate check it.  Just check a bag.
  • Everyone has given good advice......just checking though, are you aware that SW does not have seat assignments? It's open seating. I HIGHLY recomend you check into your flight 24 hours before your flight. Do it EXACTLY 24 hours in advance (if your flight leave at 4 on Saturday, check in at 4 on Friday). If you dont you will get "Group C". Group C sucks. Group C also runs a very high risk of being forced to check bags because the lovely people in Groups A&B took all the overhead bins :) Safe travels.
