Gas heat question

Hi ladies. If you have gas heat and a 2 story house, I was wondering if you could tell me:

1) what you pay for your gas bill annually; and if it's not a pain, what the breakdown is per month.

2) how many sq ft of living space you are heating.

3) what else you use the gas for (hot water heater, dryer, gas stove/oven)

3) if you converted from oil to heat, who did you use and would you recommend them?  have you noticed a savings annually on your heating bill?

We have oil right now, but it's just crazy how expensive it is - and we don't anticipate it going down.  DH and I talked last night about the possibility of getting a gas line installed and converting to gas, but we want to make sure there will be a savings.  THANKS!!!

Re: Gas heat question

  • I rent, but our rental house is a 2 story, raised ranch style house with gas heat, and my gas and electric are on one bill, so I have never separated them out. But given that my electric bill runs on average $100 prob in winter, that means the following:

    1) monthly gas in winter (Nov-Mar) is prob $300-$400/month, depending on the temp. last winter was less b/c it was so mild. then it shifts from April-May and June-Sept is prob only $50/month. Also note: our heat is baseboard heat, not forced hot air.

    2) we usually only run one zone of the house, so that's, what, 1500 s.f. or so? Downstairs is a separate zone and only runs when we have company or if it's really really cold and we are watching a movie. House is a total of like 2400 sf but one room has its own zone and is never on (storage room).

    3) Gas also runs our: stove, dryer, hot water heater, and outside grill (connected directly, best thing EVER). Oven is electric.

    4)  n/a, sorry!

Sorry, we have oil heat, and supplement with a pellet stove in the winter.

I remembered that from last year, when we thought about getting a pellet stove - never did follow through due to financial issues.  But, it's also something to consider if a conversion to gas is too far out of the budget.  You had some great info that you had posted, and it was very helpful!  Of course it's all gone now since the nest reverted back to this format!

Not your post from last year, but here's another one that I answered in. If/when you revisit pellet stoves, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.
