We just had to book a last minute flight from Montana to Illinois and when we booked, instead of paying 1,037 a ticket... if you gave up the choice of picking your airline, time of flight, and location of airport, we could get the tickets at 339 dollars. So due to the urgency of the occasion, we grabbed them.
Well we are now flying Delta, with a stop in Salt Lake, UT then to Chicago. I heard good, but mainly horrible things about Delta. I always fly Frontier, Southwest, or Airtran so I have no exp. with this airline.
Unusually small seats, lack of the basic bag of peanuts, unusually small overhead bins and overbooked (no seats left on the flight-then you get charged because of their mistake to reboard at another time) ---are the things I have heard. Are these just REALLY unhappy people or is this really Delta airlines?
Re: Flown Delta? give me the dirt..
I live in a Delta hub,so we fly them almost exclusively. Honestly to me they are on par with most any other domestic airline. The seats are the same, so I'm not sure about the unusually small comment. They do give out sodas and peanuts/pretzels on short flights and overhead bins vary by the size of the plane and are not airline specific. All airlines also overbook, but you won't get charged for that if you get bumped to another flight due to overbooking. In fact, it is more likely that you get vouchers for future flights for being flexible with your travel plans. Any time you are flying in or out of a hub you are subject to more delays simply because of logistics. I think that can apply to any airline.
I flew many times w them, national and international. Delta is my least favorite airline, or most hated airline. (Southwest and JetBlue are my favorites.) It's because my worst flying experiences are from them. Even their phone customer service was bad because they simply had a message "There are no available representatives at this time - please call back later" and it hung up on you - you didn't even have the option of being put on hold!
That being said, I've had flights with them that things run smoothly.
I am not sure how there seats compare to the old Continenal and United seats since it's been so long. I have noticed that the old United planes seats usually are not as comfortable as they are normally older.
It is true that the size of overhead bins vary exclusively on the kind of plane you are on. It does not matter what airline you travel an overhead bin is an overhead bin. Do you know what kind of plane(s) you will be on so you know how big/small things will be (and not disappointed with small overheads).
If you can, pay the extra $9 or so to get yourself in zone 1 boarding. That will save you if they have overbooked or you have a lot of stuff to put in the overhead. They also have an option (quite expensive at $59 or $69 but worth it sometimes for me) to get economy comfort seats which also get you zone 1 boarding, have you very close to business so you exit quickly and you have a nice amount of leg room. Since you have a stop this option is most likely not worth it for you as you would have to pay it multiple times.
I would say they are not the best but not the worst either. I have always gotten peanuts or pretzels and drinks.
You should find out what aircraft you will be on and then you can know what type of baggage space you may have.
Also, the feeder flight from a small town into SLC will probably not be mainline Delta. It will be one of their contract carriers (smaller, separate regional company).
Mainline Delta planes are too large to fit into most small/regional airports, hence the feeders.
I fly Delta 100% of the time. They give out free snacks and beverages on every flight (except really short ones that are less than an hour). And, you can pay extra for beer, wine, mixed drinks. If your bag won't fit in the overhead bin, they will pink tag it and check it at the gate for you to retrieve once you land in the jet bridge.
Seat sizes are standard. Seat layout depends on the aircraft.
This! DH flies each week for work, so he's on a plane twice a week, many times w/layovers. He's had weather problems, luggage problems, etc. No one airline is to blame, it happens.
I live in a Delta hub, but we fly other airlines as well, just depends on where we are going & the price. The seats are fine, you get a choice of cookie/pretzel/peanuts (which was good since we have 2 young kids, they get the cookie) & pop. Overhead bin is based on the size of the plane. You don't get charged if you're bumped, DH tries to if he can so he can get the voucher, why not!
GL on your trip!
Ditto all of this.
Delta is my personal favorite.
