Canada

We are thinking of visiting Canada for our winter vacation. Suggestions? Thank you.

Re: Canada

  • What do you like to do?  What's your budget?  How long do you want to travel for?

Canada is a pretty big place...  I don't think anyone is going to be able to offer any help without more information.

  • ...considering Canada is the second biggest country in the world you're going to have to be a wee bit more specific about your plans and budget.

I'm Canadian - born, raised and currently stuck on the praries. I've seen most of the country (except the far north) so I can give you ideas up the wazzoo but you need to give more info about what you're looking for.

  • Yes, we are a big country but as far as winter vacations go, you DON'T want to go just anywhere, winter is not very pleasant in some parts, lol.  So here are my top winter vacay recs:

    1. Whistler, BC: a winter wonderland, very pretty & festive especially around Christmas, so much to do - skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowmobiling, etc., tons of hotel options from budget condos to ultra-luxurious resorts, awesome restaurants, spas, shopping... you get the idea!  You'd fly into Vancouver here and drive up there, about 2 hours away.

    2. Banff or Jasper (or both), Alberta: pretty towns in the beautiful Canadian Rockies, ski resorts, outdoor winter activities, great sightseeing.  You'd fly into Calgary and drive from there, about an hour.

    3. Montreal, Quebec: Montreal is a beautiful city with a European feel, there's a really cool ice hotel called "Snow Village".  There's also Mont Tremblant, a popular ski resort village in the Laurentian Mountains about 2 hours away.  You'd fly into Montreal of course.

  • There is also Ottawa, which has a fun outdoor winter festival 'Winterlude' in February, and you can go skating on the Rideau Canal, the world's longest skating rink. They even rent skates so you don't have to worry about bringing them. There are also a lot of museums in Ottawa if you need some indoor activities to warm up!
  • Thank you for the suggestions. We have decided to fly into Vancouver for 10 days and hit some of the highlights, including Whistler and then hop over to Calgary and hit the city and Banff and Jasper for another 10 days. Can't wait to stay at the Banff Springs Hotel - it looks so beautiful! We are hoping for lots of snow but not too cold :)

We'll save the east for another year.
