Rome Day Trips

I will be going with my BF to Rome on one of his business trips. We are making it a vacation and staying for seven nights. We would stay longer but I have a two year old and childcare is an issue plus I know I'll miss him like crazy.
Anyhow, since we will be in Rome of course I will hit all of the main spots in Rome.
But what are some suggestions for a day trip of things nearby? A friend of mine suggested the day trip to Capri. I looked on a map and it looks far?

Ostia Antica- Very similar to Pompeii but on a smaller scale and much closer (about a 30 minute train ride as far as I recall).
