Rome Day Trips

I will be going with my BF to Rome on one of his business trips.  We are making it a vacation and staying for seven nights.  We would stay longer but I have a two year old and childcare is an issue plus I know I'll miss him like crazy.

Anyhow, since we will be in Rome of course I will hit all of the main spots in Rome.

But what are some suggestions for a day trip of things nearby?  A friend of mine suggested the day trip to Capri.  I looked on a map and it looks far?

Re: Rome Day Trips

  • We did a day trip to Pompeii from Rome, and it was awesome!   I could have stayed there for a lot longer.  We booked it through Viator.com

  • Thanks.  I found a trip through Viator that is a three day trip going to Naples, Sorrento, Capri, and Pompeii.  But I will need to find out if the tour trip includes some beach time because I really do want to spend at least a few hours lounging on the beach.  And one reviewer said on their free time they took the bus to Amalfi.  Sounds so fabulous!  The pictures are breath taking.  This planet is so beautiful!

  • Ostia Antica- Very similar to Pompeii but on a smaller scale and much closer (about a 30 minute train ride as far as I recall).

  • I will also second the recommendation for Ostia Antica. We had wanted to go there while we were in Rome last September but didn't have enough time.
  • We did a half day tour of Tivoli, it's just outside of Rome, about 30kms away. It's very pretty out there and this way you get to see the Roman countryside. The 2 main sights we saw were Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este.
