Just got our duty station....

And it's Hawaii.

I'm not excited, at all.

So, can someone who's been there PLEASE tell me why it's totally fabulous and I'm insane and should be jumping up and down for joy.

Thanks.

Re: Just got our duty station....

  • I've never been but my best friend just moved there with her boyfriend who is an Army O and she's loving it.  She's the exact opposite of a person that you would think would like Hawaii so it must be pretty freaking great.  I have never known anyone to not like it.  What is it that curbs your enthusiasm?  For me, I'd probably be upset to be so far from my family.  If that is the reason for your lack of excitement then I totally get it.

  • I'm in Hawaii now and it's just what you make of it.  It's really beautiful and the weather is perfect.  There are beautiful beaches, whales, hiking, mountains, waterfalls, tropical fruit, there is also a great mall if you are not into outdoors stuff.  We like going to the other islands and doing all the touristy stuff because you will get a great discount.  Also try to talk your friends and family into planning visits because its fun to show them around the island.  We don't love it here and after 4 years are ready to get back to the mainland, but we don't regret it at all and have had so many great opportunities and experiences.
  • So far my biggest concerns are my pets. Our kitten won't have all of her shots in time to go with us, so we have to find some place for her to live for awhile. She has a really hard time being a part from us, so I won't put her in quarantine. I think she'll stay with MIL but the whole pet thing is just a pain. It seems like our bunny can go when we go.

The other thing is the car situation. We bought a brand new truck not even a month ago, and since they only ship one vehicle, obviously we'd take the new truck. But I love my car, and I want to take it. So we're sort of debating on whether we'll sell mine and get something else there for the 3 years we're there. Or if we're going to try and ship mine. Or if I get to take the truck every where and H is going to ride his bicycle to work.

That's most of my anguish. Plus the thought of moving 6,000 something miles sounds daunting. :/

  • Those were all our main concerns as well.  We had to leave our dog and cat behind for about a month to avoid the quarantine.  It is also cheaper to avoid the quarantine.  It was a huge pain and very stressful but we just got all of the paperwork and vet work done as soon as possible and everything worked out fine.

As far as the cars go, we only brought one with us.  It worked out fine for us because of the location of our house to base and I was able to get a job that I could walk to and my husband could ride his bike to work as well.  Hawaii also has a pretty decent bus system.  We did end up buying a second vehicle after about a year.  Their are always lots of cars for sale on base pretty cheap because people don't want to pay to ship them back.  Most people I know just buy an older "junk" car to drive around for 2-3 years while they are here and then get rid of it.  When I looked into how much it would cost to ship a second vehicle I think it was around $2,000.

Other than the pets and cars everything else was like a regular PCS for us.  Good luck with the move.
