xp: Anyone stay at the military hotel on Oahu?

DH, DD and I just got back from a week and a half in So. Cal visiting family. These "vacations" are not vacations when your always going to visit people. So we're toying with the idea of heading to hawaii in October.

I'm just interested to see if anyone has stayed at any of the military hotels on Oahu? Hale Koa Hotel? DH is Coast Guard. Looks like pretty great prices but of course recs are great too!

TIA!

  • Hale Koa is GREAT! I've been going since I was little, as my dad is Navy and just visited last May with my now husband. You are in the heart of Waikiki and have access to really nice pools and the beachfront. A couple of nice restaurants to choose from and an awesome Luau right onsite ( a must-do). It's also walking distance to other fun restaurants, touristy hot-spots and shopping.

Another fun spot, if you want to be a bit more rustic, is Bellows. These book up pretty quickly though, so I'd make your arrangements well in advance to when you're actually taking your holiday. There are campsites as well as cabins. It's the most beautiful location, as you're right on the water, but you must be up for a bit more of an adventure than relaxing at the Hale Koa.

We chose to do both =)

    Best of luck! Take advantage!!

  • I love the Hale Koa.  The rooms are just average hotel rooms, but the location is great.  We've stayed there several times and when family comes to visit we always get them a room there.  Their luau is also my favorite on the island and on Friday nights just walk out on the beach and you will be able to see the fireworks from the Hilton.
  • I agree with PP, the Hale Koa is great. DH always put his family up there and we'll be staying there next time we're back on the island. Have fun!

  • Hi! My husband and I actually just got back from the Hale Koa about two weeks ago and we absolutely LOVED it! The hotel not only has incredibly great rates but beautiful views, awesome restaurants, and nice rooms as well. We of course were rarely in our room with everything we were out and about doing, but we ate at the hotel often (there's multiple restaurants within the hotel) and it's also really centrally located to almost everything we wanted to do. Needless to say we had a great experience and would recommend it to anyone :) Enjoy your upcoming vacation!

  • H and I took our HM there last month. We absolutely loved it. Here are some pics of our room:

It was also within walking distance of the beach obviously, and a lot of good shopping and restaurants. We really enjoyed our stay and plan to go back.

  • Ex went there last year and loved it.  Unfortunately I have no personal recommendation since he's an ex, but DH and Ioved Hawaii and that much I can personally recommend.

Next time you're in SoCal, take a few days off to stay at the lodge at North Island/Coronado.  That one I can give you personal recommendations on (albeit two decades old).  DH and I just stayed at LaCosta and had a company picnic at Pendleton last year and the hotels on the beach are amazing.  NI is next to the Hotel Coronado, one of the best in the area, and we used their beach (though not their facilities) fairly regularly down there.  Just an extra day or two after visiting the relatives would be worth the escape.

  • The Hale Koa is great. Great location, great prices, and several restaurant choices. They even have a small BX right there on premises for things you might need. They have a luau, a car rental place, etc. If you rent a car, the parking is across the street, but comes with your hotel room (I think it's actually a few $'s extra, but not as much as paying for public parking).

There are military places to stay at Bellows AFB, and also at Kaneohoe (sp?) marine base that are both nice too. They book fast though, so if you have dates you are planning on going, I'd look into it right away.

Have a great trip! We stayed at the HK on our move back from Japan to NJ and it was a great way to break up the trip and let us relax a bit in between the hectic OCONUS PCS!

  • Thank you so much. We know for sure when we do plan to go we will stay at the Hale Koa.
  • Hale Koa is great! :)
