British Airways seating assignments

Hi ladies,

I need a sanity check.  We're doing a codeshare flight on BA.  From what I'm understanding, I have to pay to pick our seats out unless I wait till 24 hours pre-flight, and then we can pick what's left for free.  Does that sound correct?

Has anyone waited to pick seats until the 24 hour window?  Was anything decent left?  We're flying on a 747, so there are a lot of seats, but I really don't want to be squished into the middle of a row of 4 seats on a 9 hour flight.

Feedback appreciated!

It's been a few years since I flew BA long-haul, and I don't know if they offered the option to pay for seat assignments then.  We could choose them at check-in, and I always set an alarm on my phone for exactly 24 hours before my first flight (you can usually check in 24 hours before departure, so if you have a connection to your long-haul flight it means you get to check in even earlier).  That way we knew we'd get to sit together and could likely get an aisle/window seat if we wanted.

To me, it's not worth that much money just to choose a seat.  I will take an exit row or extra legroom seat if I can, but I don't pay extra for it.  I hedge my bets by checking in as early as possible, and I've always gotten to sit by my XH when we traveled together.  Sometimes something weird happens, and we end up stuck with two middle seats (it happened once out of around 20 long-haul flights we flew together, on a packed Lufthansa flight).  In that case, oh well.  It's just 9 hours out of my life, and it's not the end of the world.  Most of the time I had to climb over XH in the aisle seat anyway, so while it was slightly annoying for him, for me there wasn't even a big difference.

PS - Middle of four is actually not so bad in a 3-4-3, because you each only have to climb over one person to get out, and no one climbs over you. Similarly, if you're ever after an aisle seat in a 3-4-3 configuration, choose the edge of the center-four over the outside of a side-three for this very reason!

  • We flew BA a couple of times last year, and will be again in October.

We will not be pre-booking seats.  We always do just fine upon check in.  It might help that we are a family of 3, and we always get three seats by a window to ourselves.  But even when I flew BA alone I never got stuck with "middle, middle" as one friend calls it.

If I were ever to get unlucky, I might change my tune.  However a 9 hour flight doesn't feel all that long to me.  ???
