So I have decided on a butterfly theme for M's first birthday. I went to the dollar store yesterday and found lots of butterfly things. I have a few questions though I'd love people's opinions on.
1) Her birthday falls on a Sunday this year. I'm not sure if we should have the party on the Saturday before or on the Sunday. The benefit of the Sunday is it gives me the whole day before off work to set up and prepare. I"m just not sure if people would want to attend a birthday party on a Sunday.
2) Most of my friends have kids ranging from about 8 years old and down. Quite a few in the 4-ish year range and 1 - 2 year range. Can you suggest any activities for the kiddos to keep them occupied while the adults visit?
3) I would like to serve a "meal". I'm a little stuck though. If it ends up being nice enough we would probably just BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs with salads, etc. Any ideas if the weather isn't so nice?
Thanks!
Re: Mackenzie's birthday party
1) I'd do whichever works better for you. Haivng it be a Sunday wouldn't deter me from going.
2) My first thought was Elefun!
The kindergarten classes always do a butterfly parade. They cut wings out of poster board and the teachers put strings in them so they can be worn like a backpack. Every kid decorates their own set. You could do something like that.
3) What about a sandwich/panini bar? You could lay out all the fixings and let people build their own. If you wanted to make it fancy, you could put a little sign with suggested combos.
Kate's Recipe Box || Relatively Bookish
We usually have Maggie's on a Sunday, so I don't see that as being a problem. As for which Sunday - that depends on if you want to spend her actual birthday running around at her party or spending it with just you guys?
Activities - I like Kate's idea. You can also give them pictures of butterflies and let them color them in and put them on sticks so they can walk around holding them up.
Food - you could make pasta or a chili type food? If you want it super casual you can order some pizza and calzones.
I like the hot dog or taco bar idea (maybe both?).
I'm not sure in terms of games and stuff but I'm sure you could google some games. I think a lot of it depends on space, weather and budget too.
We just had eli's second birthday party yesterday.
1) I don't think a sunday would deter anyone from coming unless they were coming from a ways away and it was sunday evening.
2) we have a lot of kids around 4 at eli's party. His birthday is always hot so we do a sprinkler and then just balls. yesterday the older kids spent the whole party trying to catch frogs in the garden and then carrying them around once they caught them.
3) This year we were going to do a taco bar but it just seemed like it was going to be a lot of work haha. We ended up doing the same thing we did last year which was hotdogs, brats, and polish on the grill. (I choose not to do hamburgers because I feel like its hard to get them cooked well when you are doing lots. I like that hotdogs are pre cooked) then we do chips and dip, potato salad, baked beans, pasta salad, and fruit salad.
we choose not to do games yet. its hard to get them organized with the younger ones and eli doesn't understand really.
We try to keep our birthdays on Saturdays just because none of our family lives in the same town. If the people you want to come live close then I don't see Sunday as being an issue.
You could set up a table for the older kids to decorate a butterfly. You can cut out the shape and provide crayons/markers, glitter pens, scrap paper, etc. for them to decorate with. You do do a butterfly toss game where the kids try and throw plastic butterflies into a net. Kind of like ring toss...
For food you could do pulled pork or chicken in the crock pot and then the same sides as you would do for burgers.
