if you've bought a car in teh last year or so. ...

We haven't bought a new car since 2008 and I feel like things have changed. ..

I thought when we bought DH's car in 2008 that I did the "internet sales" thing and basically submitted what I wanted on line from different dealers and then got replies from them w/ firm, non negotiable quotes.  We've tried doing the same thing this time, and we keep getting back emails from salesman trying to get us to come in and look, but the won't include a quote or if they do, they're jsut quoting us the sticker price.

Do they not do internet sales anymore w/ lower prices?

  • huh. I bought a car in January and I got several quotes online, printed them out, and brought it with me when we looked at them.

we actually got a seriously good deal on my car because he mistakenly quoted me by email the price of an older, lower trim level vehicle also on the lot.  we ran in there quick with quote in hand and they realized they messed up but they had to honor it....hehe!

  • I have no idea if they do it, 'cause that's not the method of shopping that we were interested in. We've purchased three cars in the past two years (*headdesk*) and went shopping in person each time.

  • I have never done internet sales before. We bought our pilot in 2009, and we went around looking at different dealerships before buying it. We actually did several test drives for different vehicles. DH did all kinds of research on prices etc, so we knew what we should pay and what was over priced, etc.

  • We bought last year.  We did a lot of going to different dealerships to test drive and research.  I researched prices and packages online once we narrowed it down so I knew what we should be expecting to pay.  Once we had decided on a particular vehicle, we did look at inventory all over the area by looking online and emailing for info.  If we had the option of ordering a vehicle, I think that we could have negotiated differently but DH's car transmission went and we needed to buy quickly.  We were down to two cars and there was a great deal on one of them at a local dealership so we went in that day to buy it.  The deal was posted on the website but it was one of those things that you had to email to get the full details.

  • I need to pay attention to this post, my car is the same age as Kira
  • We bought a car this year, and found that it varies as far as the online quotes. They pretty much ALL left room for negotiation, but some dealerships gave more competitive online quotes than others. We just used it as a starting point.

  • Yea, I have found it def has changed....  We bought two of our cars via the internet deals, better than we could find anywhere else.  When I bought our van in May, the internet deals were nowhere to be found.  I did use the carmax price with my dealer and they matched it within $500.

  • We just bought a new van in January.  DH knew what model we wanted and negotiated everything by email before we would even go into a dealership.  At one point, he did talk (via phone) to two different sales managers (each was vying for our business), and we went in person to the dealership that gave us the best price.

Eeven with negotiating it all ahead of time, we were still there for four hours checking out the van, test driving it, signing papers, etc.  UGH!

  • I had to buy a new one the week before x-mas. I searched online for the type and price range I wanted, found one with Toyota Carmax, went there, liked it and bought it.

In the future I will probably check Carmax directly, their prices are extremely competitive, they gave us a great deal for my broken van and the entire transaction was a breeze
