Birth Control - IUD

Revisiting this topic:

I went for a check up this morning (yay! *sense sarcasm* lol) and when my doc asked if there were any questions or concerns from me. I told her about how i was wondering about IUD's and what her opinion of them was. Her immediate response "LOVE them". So she told me all about them and next week i'm getting one put in.. the non-hormonal one... so we'll see how it goes!

She said they did only used to put them in women who had had kids, but she said now they  can do them for anyone. (I am in Canada, so i don't know if it's different in the states, but i remember this point was brought up last time we talked about this topic). She said the only "downside" to the non hormonal one is that if you have heavy periods.. you will continue to have heavy periods... now i've been on the pill for 10 years.. so honestly.. i don't remember what my periods were like before the pill. I know i USED to get cramps.. but maybe those will have subsided... or i'll just have to go back to living on Midol lol

I told her about my lack of sex drive.. and she goes "well.. that could all change now! you never know what you'll be like if you've been on the pill for so long!" haha so that's a positive.. and i'm sure hubby will be happy to hear that...

Re: Birth Control - IUD

  • Yay! I have the non-hormonal IUD (Paraguard) and I LOVE it!

Just FYI, the heavy period thing isn't a sure thing for everyone because mine aren't heavy at all..I only have one day that I would consider "heavy". You might have more painful cramps. I've always had bad cramps so they don't bother me..it's actually better than before I had it.

Anyway, congrats on your decision and just wanted to let you know that not everyone has heavy periods with the Paraguard =)

After hearing several of you talk about IUD, I think I may have to talk to my gyno about it! Hubby would probably appreciate it lol

  • I'm in pretty much the exact same situation you are in, and am seriously considering the Paraguard.  Let me know how it goes and what you think of it!  I'm not due for my yearly for a few months yet, but I think I'm going to ask her about it next time I go in.

  • I have Paraguard! It's great!!

I was on birth control for 8 years...so I too had little memory of how my periods were before the pill. The first couple months after switching I had heavy periods...but then my body got used to it. They're pretty normal now.

Also..this might be TMI but for the first couple of months my hubby could feel the strings. I went in for a checkup to make sure the IUD was were it was supposed to be and mentioned it and she clipped them so he wouldn't feel them. No big deal.
