All this Gyno talk...

So weird that everyone is talking about birth controls today...

I scheduled an appointment with my gyno (she's in my new health insurance network, YAY!!) and I said I wanted to talk to her about BC options during my visit.  I have never really been on any form of BC (only 1 year on the pill about 3 years ago, and 3 different brands at that- had so many typical side effects from the pill: weight gain, mood swings, etc) so I'm kind of starting from scratch here with the BC options.  I hate that whole trial period where you have to take a horrible pill for 3 months before you decide it isn't working... 3 months wasted IMO.

Brand suggestions (that Yaz post scared me sh*tless)? Pill or patch? IUD? Is there a BC option that a good "starting out" type of thing, as opposed to a form that might be better for a veteran user? Obviously I would ask my Dr. all these things, but how do I stay on my guard about her trying to push something controversial?  I am so trusting of professionals, sometimes it's my downfall.

Re: All this Gyno talk...

  • First of all just realize that life is trial and error so it may take a few times to get one that works for you. I would suggest trying something that works into your life. If you aren't happy with the pills then try and IUD or the patch. It depends on your body and your life.

With that said! I personally LOVED the patch. It's just something you do once a week and then when it's AF's week you just don't wear one. It's very discreet and when H and I were dating he honestly never noticed it. The only reason I quit using it is because of other issues non related to it.

  • I love my Paraguard IUD =)

  • I went thru 3 different pills before finding and loving micro estrogen...its super low and I have had no side effects...the only thing to complain about is that I cant lose weight as fast as I used to but not sure if that is due to me getting older or the pill.

  • I know other girls on here have hated it, but I LOVED the ring! I only switched off it because at $30 a month it was getting too expensive. Otherwise, I've always taken some brand of the pill with mild side effects.

It's worth it to take the time and find what's right for you!

  • I haven't had any problems with Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo Pill.

I am on the actual brand name one, and for me its 30 bucks a month.. but I am going to try the generic brand starting in a few days.. it is about 8 dollars a month, so I am hoping it goes well..

  • Yeah, your gyno would be the best one to answer these questions.  I've been on ortho tri cycles for 10 years now (I've had both name brand and generic).  However, I am looking to switch to a non hormonal IUD due to my low libido, which I have a feeling has been the culprit of my low libido....

Oh yeah, that's the other thing.  I have heard a lot of complaints on here about the low libido.  Is that a side effect of BC in general, or just the pill?

  • I would definitely say my sex drive has been affected and I can always tell if I missed a pill or my hormone levels are screwy (such as being on antibiotics) because I get nausea. But, it hasn't totally killed my sex drive (if anything it tamed me--hahaha, sorry for the tmi). I'm on the generic YAZ or tri sprintec. It works great.

It's a side effect of hormonal BC in general. I've taken Yaz for a few years now, 5 or so? I've never had problems with it and I like it.

Have you tried three different types of BC pills? There's a number of different formulations out there, each with their own side effect profile.

Yeah, it's general side effect.  Not everyone has that problem.

  • I am on Ortho Cyclen Lo and I have been for about 6 years. I haven't had any problems and I don't have a problem taking the pill at the exact same time everyday. Different forms work differently for different people, I would talk to your doctor about which form would work best for you. I feel like with all of them there is always going to be a side effect, you just have to decide which one is worth it.
