Romantic weekend in NYC, help me plan

I'd like to plan a 4 or 5 night trip for DH and I to NY (we've never been), either for the fall to see central park when the leaves are turning (when is that? Late Sept, early Oct?) or in early December to catch some of the Christmas fun.

We're not into guided tours, more of walking, people watching, relaxed. Where should we stay? Our budget for hotel is prob $250/per night. It is so hard to sort through everything on Expedia. The hotel has to have at least a queen bed, no double. We usually stay in hotels like a Marriott, but NYC seems much more expensive than we are used to seeing, which makes sense I guess.

On terms of romantic dates, any suggestions? Not really into the spa thing.

Any great restaurants, unique or trendy?

 Any seasonal must sees/do?

TIA

  • It has been a while since I've visited during the holidays, but it's not likely you can find a decent hotel that meets your budget so I'd stay away from that timeframe.

Do you have a budget for a nice meal?  There are tons of choices, but a lot will depend on what you want to spend.

  • i think you might have a really tough time finding a hotel for 250/night in december. it's one of the highest tourist seasons here. in manhattan anyway. you might be able to find one in jersey or the outer boroughs but who knows.

there are about 3 million restaurants here. do you have any particular type of food in mind? there's also so much to do that we could be here all day listing things.

the leaves change mid/end of october. super beautiful time to visit. you also might have a bit of an issue finding a hotel then for 250. we're always pricey. but it's worth it :)

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Hmmm, I guess I underestimated the price of hotels, but our budget is flexible I guess, it's a few months away at least. So, budget aside I guess, what's a good place to stay? Within walking distance to central park? As for restaurants, can you recommend a good place for a steak, with a view?
  • We are heading to NYC for our babymoon. We are staying at the Hilton on avenue of the America's. With hotel taxes $250 isn't happening like anywhere. Taxes alone are around $40 which leaves about $210 for a room rate. We got a rate of $323 with taxes and a AAA discount. Also keep in mind if you are driving parking can be $30-$50 a day but there are coupons available too so google. The Hilton is close walking distance to times square, central park, 5th ave and near theatres and MOMA and there are plenty other hotels in the area. If you want a nice dinner on a budget (well still maybe like 40pp, some are still high at like 80 pp but just google around)  check out theatres offering pre theatre or post theatre menus.
  • Sorry I meant check out restaraunts offering pre or post theatre menus
