do you participate in pot lucks at work?

We had one yesterday - I participated and I love the idea of it, but I'm always worried about what stuff is and how clean people are, etc.

I'm really glad that we only have a tiny fridge and microwave so we can't really do this stuff. My one coworker always gives us homemade cookies for Christmas and they're terrible and the other coworkers don't cook at all. I can't imagine having to suffer through eating things they made while they are watching me.

We don't have pot lucks in my office. Sometimes people bring in food to share (usually store-bought). I used to bring in cake/cupcakes/cookies regularly. It was a good way to get rid of extra baked goods.

Yes, every now and then the special Ed staff does one just for us and we are assigned one month during the school year to do either breakfast or lunch for the whole staff.

we don't do them here. people do like to bring in treats and leave them on the conference table where anyone can eat them. I do that whenever I have leftover cakes, cookies, or other things I don't want sitting around my house.

once every year we have a parking lot cookout where my boss brings in his grill and we sit outside and have burgers & hot dogs though. that is kind of fun.

With the old group I worked with, yes, we did them often. It's a PITA to lug something on the metro though and I have a funny story that ends with me falling up the metro escalators with a giant glass bowl of taco salad, which then ended up being a plastic bag filled with taco salad and glass shards after I tripped. With my new group, we aren't really in the position to do them, too many busy and conflicting schedules and off-sites. Our office overall does celebrate birthdays monthly, so once a month the main admin gets a cake for all the birthdays of that month and we get together, sing, and eat cake for about 20 minutes.

Nothing like that has happened at this new job. I think part of it is the culture of the office, but part of it is likely a space issue. We don't have a kitchen, just a mini fridge, no conference room, etc. We're moving, just our team, to a new space in a month or so that will be just us and will have a conference room all to ourselves. Still no kitchen or big fridge, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw treats at Christmas. I know I'll bring stuff in.

The company I was with a couple of years ago had them regularly and I always participated. We had lots of folks from various parts of the world and getting to sample international cuisine was a treat. Plus I love to cook/bake, so it was an excuse to put something together and share it.

There was a discussion on my BMB recently about people not eating potluck foods because they don't know a person's cleanliness, but I eat out so much that it would be ridiculous for me to be concerned by my co-worker's cleanliness. Sure, we assume that a restaurant is clean since it's open and had to pass certifications to get to that point, but that doesn't mean it's spic 'n' span *now*, when I'm eating there.

I do participate but I will only eat what I bring in or what one of my bosses makes. I am too skeptical of others. My stomachi is too sensitive to risk some things

Yes we have them from time to time and I always participate, they're fun! I trust my co-workers and in the years I've been here so far no one has gotten sick, so I don't have any reservations.

Since I'm in charge of the food section, I'm always pressured to have the best thing on the table. Regarding cleanliness and stuff though, I don't worry that much. I mean, in reality, I don't know how perfectly clean my friends are when they give me food as gifts or I eat at their house, and I would never turn them down, right? Life's too short, in my mind.

I love potlucks! We only do them occasionally at my current job but we did them monthly at a previous job.

Like LLHR said, I am sure I've eaten at establishments that aren't as clean as I'd like them to be so I don't really worry about it.

We only have like 2 a year, and I do participate. I'm not worried about the cleanliness of my co-worker's food. Even nice restaurants are not as clean as you would think (Cheesecake Factory in Columbia AND Inner Harbor both have mice running around the kitchen and are REALLY dirty. My DH has had to work on machines in the kitchen offices. He won't eat there.) Plus, you REALLY don't know if the food preparer washed his or her hands before cooking your food, etc.

We don't do pot lucks, but people bring in community food all the time. Some of it's good, some of it is not my cup of tea.

I'm the self-proclaimed office baker and I bring in a dessert for every person's birthday. I hope other people don't worry about me being clean!

This. To me, it's an "out of sight, out of mind thing." I know specific co-workers who do not wash their hands so I'm definitely not going to eat their food.
