So starting today, the benefits of the new Health Law concerning women's preventative care are in place.
"On August 1, 2011, HHS adopted additional Guidelines for Women?s Preventive Services ? including well-woman visits, support for breastfeeding equipment, contraception, and domestic violence screening and counseling ? that will be covered without cost sharing in new health plans starting in August 2012. The guidelines were recommended by the independent Institute of Medicine (IOM) and based on scientific evidence."
two thoughts,
1. how awesome is it that the breastfeeding equipment is included! yea!
and 2. Can someone explain why some employers are so hell bent against providing coverage for BC for their employees? I understand that they personally are against using them for reasons which I can respect. However, why not just accept that all healthcare coverage comes with no-cost BC and if you want to supply benefits to your workers that is part of the deal. This is just one of those places where I think the separation of church and state is a good thing. And I don't think employers should be able to pick and choose what medicines that their employees have covered in their medical plan.
Re: Health Law's No-cost BC
On your part 2-
Amen sister!
I don't get why people are so against it. Honeslty half the cr@p I've heard about women being called sluts and whores because they are on the pill makes me think someone (or group) is trying to completly undo women's rights. It pisses me off. I mean I just don't get it.
1. Yay is right!
2. I truly have no idea! Actually, I think the push back comes from it being a woman's health issue and for whatever reason people are inclined to think they have a right to tell women what to do with their bodies. Is viagra covered? Are those against covering BC against covering viagra too? Also, for many women birth control pills aren't always used for the sole purpose of contraception, there are other reasons to take the pill. If your personal beliefs are against using birth control, then don't use birth control. I'm not sure why it has to be more difficult than that.
Everyone is exhausted from yesterday;)
1) Yay indeed! That stuff is $$$$.
2) I don't understand that either. I think it's ridiculous that my employer should dictate whether or not I take BC. I agree - if they don't want to use it, that's fine. But I should have the same right to make a choice. I feel like more and more we're being told what to do and that irks me.
How is your foot? Are you off of your crutches? We should plan a lunch soon!
I'm a big fan of the ACA, so I'm excited that this is going into effect.
If only it had been in effect when I got Mirena and what I had to buy a pump, oh the savings I would have seen.
I remember doing a huge project in college on how ridiculous it was that insurers were covering Viagra, yet unwilling to cover birth control. Almost 15 years later, there were so many still facing the same issue. It's ridiculous and I'm happy that for many this issue will now be behind them.
Why is it only BC for women, though? I want vasectomies covered, too, damnit!

My three sons!
My foot is slow to heal. But I only used the crutches for the first two weeks thankfully. I am on week 7 in the boot and have another 3 ahead of me. But I could probably manage some lunch so long as the distance wasn't too far. I am still only coming in a couple days a week at this point. It will be hard to adjust to a normal schedule again once everything settles! hahaha
Market Square sounds good then?
My three sons!
Only if you plan to cart me down there. Or give me a 15 minute head start!
I'll push you around any day!
My three sons!
Amanda, I still have your baby sling here at my desk - think you would fit in that?
hahahaha... now that would be something to see. All my long limbs sticking out from all angles of that!
