Yard sale ppl

I'm attempting my first yard sale this weekend. It's a big community thing, but we have never participated. DH is making fun of my prices, saying that I'm making them too cheap!

What do you typically see at yard sales for kids stuff and decorative items? Most of my toys are $5 or less, books 25 cents, decorations $1-3. I haven't even decided if I'm putting clothes out (I have 12 bags of Lanna's clothes on my porch). Is that too cheap?

Re: Yard sale ppl

  • It depends.  If I stopped by your yard sale, I would stock up!  So, if you want to get rid of everything and not have to put anything back into your house, then I say it's fine.  Some people will price things at a higher point, but there have been a lot of yard sales that I have looked at their stuff and then walked away because I knew I could get it somewhere else cheaper (at another yard sale).  So, I think that the lowest you would accept without making it too painful for yourself is where you should price things.  And a word on the kid's clothes...sell those!  People are always looking for kids clothes (not adult clothes though, in my experience).  You could price an outfit for $2 or $3 dollars and easily make a lot of money on that alone.  You can donate what doesn't sell, but if it were me I'd try to sell first.

Good luck!  I just love yard sales.

Say what?! I guess I need to start digging through some girl clothes!

DH told me to price higher b/c people will automatically haggle at a yard sale. I hope that's not true b/c he's the negociator in the family and he's not going to be there! He said I'll be lucky if I make $100 the way I have things priced. Embarrassed

  • I think generally people do haggle...because the prices are just too high for used things at most people's sales.  But, then you find that place that is priced just perfect and there is no need to haggle since things are so cheap already.  If I were you, I would just tell people that there is a no haggle policy at your sale.  LOL  If anyone would want to pay less, you just have to ask yourself if you think it's worth less, or if you want to get rid of it.  I once sold a used camcorder for $400, and in the same sale went from things priced .75 down to .25.  It really just depended on the item and what I thought was reasonable.  Although someone did try to get me to sell the camcorder for less, I stuck to my guns, and they bought it anyway.  for me, it was worth it to keep it if I couldn't get $400 for it (It was over $900 when I bought it a year earlier...and I used it like 6 times).

A thing about yard sales...they won't get you rich quick...but, they sure will give you back some money on things you don't use.  If you look at it that way, $100 in your pocket is better than lugging all that stuff back into your house and having it take up space that you could be using in a different way.  KWIM?  I guess it's all relative.

also...you could do things like sell books 3/$1 instead of .25.  That way, people are more likely to buy 3 of your items, and you don't have to worry about keeping lots of change around (and you get a little more for each book than you would if you sold it separtely).  I've also sold adult clothes like this "Fill up the bag for $5" and I provided a shopping bag that people could stuff to the gills.  I would've donated the clothes, so for me it was getting a couple bucks for something that I ultimately would've donated for free, kwim?

  • Right, I'm mostly interested in selling our treadmill, loveseat, playhouse, slide etc. Big things that are hard to dispose of and that actually are worth something. Anything I make beyond that is icing on the cake. It's a lot of work cleaning things up and setting it all out at 8 a.m. by yourself with two kids though, so I'm hoping it's somewhat worthwhile!
  • We went to a yard sale a couple of weeks ago and they just said every article of clothing was a dollar except for some specific items set off to the side. I agree - people will negotiate. We were buying 20 pieces of clothing, so she cut us a deal.

Does Lanna like to help?  My mom recently taught Brinley how to fold towels/clothes and now she wants to do it all the time.  Then I taught her how to sort laundry and we do it together and she has a blast.  Why did I not think of teaching her earlier?

  • Yes, she loves to fold clothes (she's just not that good at it)!

How to people usually display clothes at a yard sale -- do they just lay them on a blanket?

We saw them laying either on a big blanket or on tables.

  • When I've done yard sales in the past, I always priced things low, regardless of what I originally paid. I think your prices are spot on. I think if your desire is to get rid of the stuff and make a little cash your prices are great. I know some people think theyr'e going to make a windfall from a yard sale - not so. People who shop yard sales (myself included) are frugal and know when something is a good deal.

    Good luck!

We've actually just given Wes's stuff away as soon as he has outgrown it because we didn't want to end up with 12 bags of unworn clothes again!

What sizes do you have for Lanna? I may be interested in them.

0-2T I believe. If I recall correctly, I gave her 3T stuff to my friend. I will probably end up with some 4T stuff when the fall weather starts, but I don't have time to tackle that before the move!

I am going to be SOL if we accidentally get pregnant again!

  • A yard sale isn't about making money its about selling all your junk.  I price all kids clothes at 25 cents and adult clothes at 50 cents.

If you're doing it to get rid of stuff then price to sell.
