Need tips on getting organized

I need your help.  I am feeling extremely overwhelmed recently.  My job has been cr-azy since the election and there are no signs of things slowing down.  Trying to get things in order for the baby and keep home, bank account and other commitments in some type of order has become really difficult.

Does anyone have tips for keeping and staying organized?  I am a master at making lists, but I struggle with the time management aspect of getting all this stuff done.  How do you do it?  I try and set aside time each evening to get prepared for the next day, but I feel like there is never enough time!

Thanks gals!

Re: Need tips on getting organized

  • You have about 3 months left till babycadence comes, yes?

    How helpful is YH?

I keep a large wall calendar out (prominently.  you can't walk into the kitchen w/o looking at the calendar) on our desk in the kitchen.  It has all our committments written on it.  Appointments, invitations, etc. are put on it as soon as they come up.  Then the cards are tossed.

As far as house cleaning, don't worry too much.  You'll eventually start nesting (most likely) and you'll get though a lot then.  Otherwise, my mantra is 20 minutes in ne room or 5 minutes in every room.  It doesn't keep the house spotless, but the chaos is manageable.

I can't really help you with banking... pretty much everything of ours is done  automatically online.

    GL.

  • Are you overwhelmed at work, home, or both?

My job was *insane* in November.  I'm talking six hours of meetings every day, and staying late to deal with tasks from the meetings.  Such a pain.  I've started blocking out time in my calendar every day.  At first I felt guilty about it, making myself unavailable to people.... but then I realized that I actually do need a few hours a day to get my job done.  The meeting culture here is over the top, so I have to carve out my own time out of the day.

The best part is, I put annoyingly generic labels on my 2-hour "meetings".  "Review" "Planning" and my favorite, "Busy".

Decide when you want to go to bed, then back up from there.  Allow whatever time you need to get ready for bed, put things away, and get ready for the next day.  Then start an hour earlier.  You'll still find thigns to fill up the time, but that way, you'll end at the original time you wanted to get to bed.

    And remember to breathe.
  • I've tried various things. I'd either do a room a day OR do a whole house task a day. So Monday might be "clean the bedroom" day, or it might be "vacuum the whole house" day. It switches because I can't keep up a routine, lol. I still do "Financial Thursdays" since we get paid on Friday and I like to have all of my bills ready to go.

This is gonna sould backwards, but as a dead line-oriented person, i've found that it hurts me to be too pro-active. I put it off anyways, or I take too long to do it and can't be decisive.

  • When we don't feel like cleaning, but the house really needs it, we set the timer for anywhere between 10-30 minutes for cleaning. Whatever gets done in the allotted time, cool, whatever doesn't oh well. Usually we are trying to beat the clock and everything can get cleaned (not perfectly) in 30 minutes. Of course, we also live in a small house. Forces you stay organized really. Also I swear by outlook's calenders and and task managers. If you don't use them already, look into it.

    Best.

Both.  Mostly home I guess because of feeling that drive to have everything in order before the baby arrives.

This is great advice y'all.  Thanks.

  • Do you have cash to hire someone to clean?  what about friends close enough that when they offer to help, you can say, "actually, what I really need help with is getting things organized before the baby comes"?

Good ideas.  I feel like I need to hire a personal organizer.  Luckily my sister is coming out from California for a couple of weeks in January and she has already offered to help with a lot of stuff.  Bonus, she used to work at the Container Store so knows about organizing.
