Do people live under rocks?

A girl on my local just posted that she "just heard that we're in a recession" and that this was the first she'd heard that there were problems.

Um....

Re: Do people live under rocks?

  • Seriously?!  What's the matter with her?!

  • Well, that's it.  I'm moving to the twin cities - sounds like things are doing pretty swell there. ;)
  • That is hilarious.  I would love to live in her world.
  • Now, after getting some flack, she's backpeddling and saying that she knows the economy is bad even though she never thinks about it because she and everyone she knows is doing fine - she really meant that she hadn't heard the government admit that we're in a recession.

P.S. Marquis - I have heard that the twin cities are doing better than other similar-size cities, but I have no idea if there's really any truth to that.

  • If she said she wasn't aware we're in a recession that doesn't necessarily mean she's an idiot. ?By the strict economic definition, we're not officially in one until the fourth quarter reports negative growth in GDP.

If that's what she meant, I'd agree completely. I somehow doubt it, though.

  • From what you said, I do too. ?I'm just trying to give her the benefit of the doubt...

That's what I always heard, too.  But the talking heads on CNN yesterday were saying that's a myth.  Economists do look at unemployment, manufacturing, retail, etc when determining whether or not we're in a recession.  They say we've been in a recession for over a year (big shocker!)

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • That's mainly a recent trend of the National Bureau of Economic Research-- redefining things so that their jobs sound more important and necessary (because, you know, anyone can look the quarterly reports and find two consecutive quarters of economic growth). Wink

    ?

ETA: They're pretty much the only ones who use the new definition.?

  • HAHAHA!

One of my co-workers asked me a few weeks ago if we "really owe money to China."

She heard it on the news and thought it was a fake story drummed up by the liberal media.

this made me lol and lol.
