Labeling backpacks?

Alright - my son's school recommends "labeling" their backpacks with their name and bus #.

How do you this? Just a piece of paper? Actual label?

Another side note: for those with kids who have a "supply" list - do you pack all of the supplies in their bag on the first day? Most of the supplies are theirs for the year, but there are a few things for the teacher (tissues, dry erase markers...).

Re: Labeling backpacks?

  • We have an backpack from Pottery Barn embroidered with his name, which is good for labeling and inside is a place to write/label more. That backpack is super durable and can take a beating.  :)

You could let Gavin pick the pattern and order it, that would be fun.

  • I was actually going a monogrammed one from LL Bean, Sami, but TRU had their big school supply sale last week (with free lunch box) so Gavin picked out a character one from there. I do need to check if there is a small pocket for a piece of info. paper of sorts...

    Good thought, though!

  • Would a backpack tag be okay? (I know it's removable, so I wasn't sure) I used this seller on Etsy for a bag label for our daycare bag and was pleased: http://www.etsy.com/listing/79228880/custom-made-backpack-tag-luggage-diaper
  • I bought name bubbles clothing/fabric stickers for Jackson's backpack, lunch box and coat/shoes, etc.

  • We use name bubbles also - I think they have labels that you can create to list bus number, allergies, etc.  I could tell you for sure, if the website actually worked for me here!

Oh fantastic idea - I can always find a way to secure it on the inside of his bag!

And Lisa & Meghan - I never thought to label his lunch box too. Thanks for the bubbles tip - Oy, I have a lot to learn!

  • We use a luggage tag on Noah's backpack.  The school sends us a "bus pass" of sorts, that we put in there.  It has his name and bus number on it.

When I asked when Noah went to kindy about labeling his lunchbox - the teacher told me I could if I wanted...but the kids know which is theirs.  And if they forget it, every other kid in the room knows that the "Transformer" lunchbox belongs to Noah and they will give it to him/remind him to take it, etc.    So writing it on the inside with sharpie will probably be sufficient.

Good point! Even my 2-yr old "knows" kids and their parents at the stores, whom I have no clue who they are. So perceptive!

  • Kids on my school bus typically have a luggage tag on their backpacks (they zip the tag inside the smaller pocket) with that info on it and e kindergarten and first grade team hers give each student a small tag with their name, bus # and stop!! Having the bus stop helps GREATLY, especially when the normal driver is out sick and they have a sub, if your child misses his stop accidentally they know where to take them back to and how to contact you just in case!

  • I wrote on Adams Kidermusick book bag with a fabric marker from Joanns- of course that wont work on a plastic one.....

I was going to suggest a luggage tag. I know Target has an aisle of kid luggage and has kid friendly tags and such too!

  • I just taped a piece of paper with Aidan's name on the inside.  He's also had backpacks that had a place to write a name.  For lunchboxes I wrote with a sharpie on the outside (on the back).  At his school, all the lunchboxes go into a big pile at recess and it makes it easier to find (until everyone knows which lunch bag belongs to which kid).

For supplies - if he has a lot to carry, i'd break it up into days.  Send tissues one day, markers another.  That way, he doesn't have to carry too much.  The other thing you can do is wait until back to school nite (or if they have a meet the teacher before school starts, take them then).
