not sitting near your boss/group - yay or nay?

I manage a small group of 4 and we are part of larger department of 35ish.

We're moving to a new building this Fall and my boss just informed me that our group will probably be on a different floor than the rest of our group.  They had intended for us to all be together, but b/c of a variety of new issues, they need to move us.

I'm kinda annoyed b/c we're already a slightly segregated group b/c of what we do and this will make that worse and I also think it'll be a PITA when we have to work together.  but, on the other hand, I'm kind of excited to be "on our own." but then I'm a little concerned my boss will try to micromanage us b/c we'll be further away too.

Anyone have any experience with this?

  • A few years ago this happened in our company.  We outgrew our space and they leased a second, smaller suite on the same floor to accommodate some employees.  That group felt completely segregated and out of the loop over there.  They state they no longer feel connected to the larger group.  Or so I have heard from a few in that group.  I personally think their thoughts/feelings are a result of company culture more so than their move across the hall.

However, next Friday our entire office is moving to a much larger suite that will incorporate all employees/departments.

  • In all of my positions, it's been a priority for the groups who will work together to be seated together. It was often a struggle to get everyone to "fit" as the company/groups grew, but it just made more sense. There was a timeframe during which I didn't have clearance to be seated with my group and it was a humongous pain in the ass. I hated it.
