We are having my son's 4th bday party on Labor Day weekend. 12-14 adults and 6-9 kids (they range from 8 to 16). Noon start time. Just tonight he said he wanted a baseball theme so my initial thoughts:
Apps: cracker jacks and soft pretzels (with mustard dipping sauces), peanuts in shells, and I don't know what else. Some sort of meat? fruit salsa and cinnamon chips? Plain fruit? Veg tray?
Meal: hot dogs and brats with a toppings bar- chili, diced onion, mustard, ketchup, relish, saurkraut; and whatever else I can think of for sides. Potato salad, pasta salad, tossed salad, baked beans, anything else scream baseball?
Dessert: some sort of cake and ice cream. I was thinking baseball cake pops and a bat cake, but now I'm wondering if I can figure out some baseball icecream thing. I could move the cracker jacks to here too or I could just give those as favors.
I'll figure out some baseball decorations as I go.
ETA: I don't care if anything else goes with the baseball theme. I'm just trying to think of some food to round things out and if anyone has a clever baseball idea I'd be up for it.
Re: First pass party thoughts
Thought I'd share this for additional ideas, but you have things pretty covered. http://jaimecooks.wordpress.com/2011/07/31/foodbuzz-24x24-take-it-out-to-the-ballgame/
Pretzel bread is genious! I was wondering how to deal with baking the soft pretzels and cutting them up etc, but the bread is awesome.
Now I have to figure out how to make ice cream baseballs.

This looks fabulous! I'm now definitely craving a grilled hot dog!
I'm sorry to hear the beer cheese dip didn't turn out. One of our fave restaurants at another house had a beer cheese dip that would make you weep, it was so good. I've found a recipe that looks like it might be close, but I have no idea until I have an occasion to make it.

I've been looking at those baseball hat bowls, but there are 2 problems. 1- they only have team logos and I don't want any team. 2- I'd need 2 sets and that's $20. $20 I'd rather put to food. I did find some plastic baseball caps that would fit my kid's head. I thought I could fill with the peanuts in the shell to put out on tables. I'd only need 3 (for $6 total) and I know they'd play with them after.
As much as I hate cupcakes I'm thinking about doing cupcakes and putting some sort of bat decoration on top. I'm going to play with using plastic wrap to form an ice cream ball that I could put some licorice in for the lacing.
Honestly, I'm almost glad it was bad, 'cause it gives a good excuse for staying the hell away from velveeta.
Velveeta was fine as a kid, but as an adult, it's just not ok. I use it less than once a year, but every time I do, I wonder why I bothered.

Hi! Hope all is well...
Love everything... here is my "2 cents":
1. Move Cracker Jacks to favor. Could also add bags of Cotton Candy etc.
2. Re: Appetizers, def would do the Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips or a Veggies and Dip thing instead. Do you have a good receipt for the Fruit Salsa and Chips you could share?
That's it! Wish I could come.
