Any psychologists here?

Does anyone here know what I would need to do to become a psychologist?  I know it probably varies from state to state.  I already have my Masters in Social Work.  Would I need to get a Masters in Psychology or can I try to obtain a certification instead since I already have a masters degree in a related field?  TIA!

Re: Any psychologists here?

  • You could begin by getting your license in clinical social work. You would counsel clients much like a psychologist, though I am sure the pay is less. Then you could determine if you like it and if financially it is worth it to go back to school.

  • To be a licensed psychologist, you have to have your doctorate in psychology, with appropriate license to go with your state. You can do clinical social work with a masters in social work, but as far as psychologist goes, you do need a doctorate. OR, you can be a limited license psychologist which means you would have to practice under someone else, with a masters in counseling and specialization in mental health (depending on your state guidelines). Hope this helps Smile
